Does anyone know the proper attachment of a unit's SSI (US Army) to the kevlar? Is it the right side, left side, both, or the commanders discretion.

I've never been in a unit that even does this, so I'd say commander's discretion. Push come to shove, you could look in AR 670-1.

The only units I know of that even do that these days are the 3rd ID...and occasionally the 4th.

101st puts Brigade identifiers on their helmets, too, but not the unit patch. I think more units are adopting this, but I have to say thst I think it's according to local unit policy and there is not army-wide standard.

Thanks for your respones. I volunteered to deploy and I actually got picked up by a unit on the mainland. My battalion commander, as he was wishing me good luck, told me to make sure I put the brigade SSI on my kevlar. I replied which side sir, and he said, both. I kind of laughed inside to myself. I have the insignia's, but before having anything sewn on, I just wanted to see if there was any guidance out there. No luck spotting anything in the 670-1 but then again that is a big document. Thanks again.

hejab99, this is a tradition that goes back to WWII. When the M-1 "Steel Pot" helmet was worn. Then division insignia was painted onto both sides of the helmet. (I think this began with the 3rd Inf Div during its time in Algeria?) And later spread to other Army units during war. The 4th Inf Div began doing this back in early 2003, as previously stated. The 34th Inf Div (Minnesota Army National Guard) has also begun to wear its insignia on its helmets covers.

I Thinks it is tradition since WWI.
