Well today I went to the local range. Ive been dying to try one of those new Springfield XD's, and they just so happend to have 3 for demo. A 9mm, a .40 and at .45ACP. I shot about 100rds of .45 and I absolutly loved it. Now all I need is my licences and Im off to bye a new Springfield XD in .45.
Who around here own's one? How are they in the long run. I've hurd nothing but good things about the XD. I love the price too a new 45 in edmonton is $900 canadian.
Are there any people out there that did own one but didnt like them? Why?
Also if anyone has any pictures of their own Springfield XD's I would love to see them so post them If you would like.

I own one, a 5-inch Tactical model that was purchased back in April. I've put a few hundred rounds through it since then and it has performed flawlessly. No jams, misfires, stovepipes, or anything of the sort. Accurate, and not too heavy either. So...I like it. :-)

My only complaint with the XD's are that if you're shooting a high volume of rounds in a short period of time the trigger tends to get very hot unlike most of it's competitors.
As for accuracy and ease of use, I love the gun.

Its actually kind of funny, the first round I fired was great. Nice trigger pull I loved it. The round was ejected properly but the next round failed to load and the slide stuck open. I tried to fix this by pulling back on the slide and releasing but that didnt work. So since im no expert i had the range office help out. He tried the same thing and had no luck so he locked the slid and removed the magazien and then gave it back to me. When i put the magazine back in and hit the slide release it worked perfectly for the next 98 rounds.
The xd i shot was a 5in .45 tactical with recular sights.
How do you find the Night sights, are they worth the extra money?
ps I was using reloaded rounds.

Hmm how many rounds are we talking and how fast? The only thing i didnt like about the trigger was it wasnt like a 1911, it took a little getting used to. I dont know what it was it felt like a single action but there was a point you had to bring it back to befor you could pull it again or it wouldnt go bang.
Also once I pulled the trigger it went click but the round didnt go off, the primer was dented but it didnt go off. I tried to pull the trigger again but it wasnt cocked so i had to drop the mag out and pull the slid back and try it again. it went bang the second time.
Why did that happen?

A lot of demo guns have a tendency to **** like that sine most have a very high round count and are always the best lubed firearms.
Night sights are a personal thing that I happen to like on my pistols but it is completely up to the user and what he/she likes and it also depends on what you intend to use t for.
But if you're interested.

I am happy to hear that the XD is a nice weapon. I was planning on getting one this week but I ended up getting a glock 19 since I found out that if you show your military ID you can pick one up for $399. I wanted an XD slightly more, but I am not quite rich enough that I can ignore getting a quality weapon so cheap.

Yeah i was looking at the Night sighted ones, it looks like they are a bit fatter then the regular sights. So im guessing i couldnt swap them out if i felt like it latter.

As far as I know you can swap them at a later date if you choose, But I haven't done anything but shoot the XD so I'm 100% on that.

350 rounds in about 40 minutes.

they were reloads. so that explains that but I was wondering more about how the trigger works on an XD.
The reason I ask is because if I pull the trigger and it goes click in the "field" can i pull the trigger again or do i have to pull the slide back to **** the pistol again? Is the trigger more of a single action rather than a double where the trigger pulls the firing pin every time?

Well if you're in the field and you have a faller to fire why wouldn't you rack the slide to get the bad round out of the chamber anyway?
And to answer your question, Yes you would need to rack the slide.
And here's a pic of my 40 service model.

I apologize for location saying Ottawa. That was where I was born and raised (and lived when I registered for this site) I am now in Vermont about 5 hours south. I was never a glock person myself (only based upon looks) but I just couldn't argue with the price. I didn't even know that handguns were that expensive back in Canada. In Ottawa I don't even know where a person would go to buy a handgun.

I have one in 9mm. It's a good gun for it's value. Fun to shot, easy to take down and clean...
If you buy it in .40 then you can buy a conversion barrel to 9mm. But not the other way around.
Night sights are gucci but in Canada you are not allowed to shot after dark outside, so unless you are going to a range that is specifically designed for low light conditions, I don't think you need them.
In Canada 4 inch is a prohib.... So you will only be able to get your hands on the Tactical model.

Again that depends on what the person is going to be using it for.
Are you going to use it for a CCW?
Are you just going to use it as a range gun?
Each model has it's place it just depends on your needs.

Here's my $.02. I had the 5" Tactical in .40 and loved it. Good shooting gun, very accurate. However, the finish that SA puts on the slides is not very good. My XD looked like a well worn Sig after just 3 weeks. The holster wear was just obscenely bad for the time period. Other than that I really enjoyed it.

yep right from wiki
Pre-2006 versions of the XD were protected with a metal treatment called Bruniral. Some who own pistols with the Bruniral treatment have reported significant rust problems - especially those who carry the XD against their skin. Fortunately, current versions of the XD are being manufactured the Melonite brand of Carbonitriding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbonitriding), which is the same process as the Tenifer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenifer) coating used on Glocks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glock)

XD's are great, Springfield has/ has had a winner in the XD's for while now. I've fired all versions, only one i didn't like was the Sub Compact 9. it was a bit of a bronco in your hand.
Shot a friends 9 today, he hadn't cleaned it out in like 3 months and still was a tack driver.

09-14-2007, 01:49 AM
Yeah the XD.45 I shot today was a club gun so who know's how many rounds have gone threw that thing its a very busy place too. It looks like it was never cleaned and the officer i talked to said they dont have time to clean them that often. But yet it went threw all 100rds with only the first problem then a miss fire, and it was probably one of the nicest feeling guns ive ever shot (not that im and expert) and one of the straightest too. Plus I havent shot in like 6 months so.... The balence was great too.
I dont know why I want a 1911 so bad, maybe its the cool factor.

You can get good deals on XD's, you just have to shop around. If you buy second hand, you will get an even better deal. If you are just shooting targets, I would go for something smaller then .45. Seeing as ammo is going up 30% in Canada. Try Elwood Epps, Armco, SIR mailorder, some of the good ones.

Had a .45ACP 5-inch Tactical XD for a while. I loved it. Got rid of it because it was just as heavy as my 1911 (admittedly with twice the ammo) and because I dont really like polymer guns except for carry. Still have my 3-in XD40 subcompact, which I carry frequently. The one problem I have had (with both) was that the inside edges of the trigger safety channel, and/or outside edges of the trigger safety itself, chewed up my fingertip on long range sessions. I smoothed them with a synthetic stone, and that cleared right up.
The subcompact, I put Meprolight Tritium nightsights on, with a green/white dot in front and orange/white in back. I love them. The dots are huge, and very bright, much better than the Trijicons I have on my other night-sighted firearms.
If you are looking at any Springfield, I recommend getting Meprolight as an aftermarket accessory.

Well the reason I ask is because I had a look at the difference between the night sighted xd, and the regular sighted xd.
The difference was that the Night sighted XD's sights were thicker latrally and where they were placed was also thicker to deal with the sight.

I've owned a 5" Tactical .45 for over a year now. Put well over 5,000 round through it with not ONE failure. Factory, reloads, whatever it spits it out.

got my 4-in in .45 acp last year, i believe, $545 after tax or thereabouts...
great gun, have yet to have a failure although im still sub-1000 rds at this point though...but compared to the 1911's i shot i found it to be much more accurate and WOW so smooth, i mean it shoots like a dream...i shot accurately with one hand at the range like no big deal...did much better than my bro with his new 1911
i have no complaints, the only thing i can think of is i think i might have the old finish on mine although it has not starting wearing yet (i do not conceal carry or have a holster either)
and as for cleaning its so simple its almost stupid
i shoot winchester WB and have never had a jam...only prob with .45 is price of brass has gone up sooooo much i mean within a month of me buying it i was paying like $15 extra bucks per 100 rd box of WB down here in Texas and i think i put about 125 rds of remington through it (but remingtons rounds don't seem to be of the highest quality)
yeah i would definitely go with a good set of night sights
whoever said it is a good starter handgun couldnt be more right it was my first (still first and probably my only handgun for now, working on my first AK right now!)

The reason I went to the range was to try the 9 ane the 40. I enjoyed shooting both very much not as much snap from the XD's in either model. I also shot the Sprinfield 1911. The 1911 and the service model (4-inch) XD40 are my sidearms of choice. Both are dead reliable and easy to shoot. I'd say that the 1911 is a touch more accurate due to that extra inch of barrel.
As for Police using the XD, there are quite a few that allow it. The first big one I know of is Chicago PD. They now allow the Officer to carry A Glock (I forget which model), the XD, or the S&W M&P.

Just bought a 4in .40 last week. I love this thing so far it's my first handgun. Any recommendations on what's a good light to put on it that isn't insanely expensive?

Jax in AR. Same with our sheriffs deputes . They go off a list . When i was with PCSD the list was very limited . I started off with SW 686 then went with GL21. Some of the smaller forces do not issue your firearm .

I like my XD-40 quit a bit. I've had it about 3 years now. Never had any problems w/ rust or feeding issues. It feels very comfortable in my hand.

I used to own a Springfield XD-9 about 5 years ago. I had no complaints about it at all. However, I have tried many different handguns and have come to the conclusion that I prefer the Sig Sauer and Hi-Power, as I feel that their craftsmanship, ergonomics and ease of shooting sets them apart from all the others that I've owned. I now own a Sig P239 (.40S&W/.357Sig), P229 and a Belgian-made Browning Hi-Power (9mm). For the price, the XD is a fine pistol with no detractions in my opinion.
