Moin mates,
no goverment will last forever so I have a question from the far away Germany considering Defence politics under a possiblke Rudd Goverment.
Some Basich Questions
How is there manner considering Defence in General?
Would they increase or decrease defence Spending?
Would they buy more or less Equipment?
Would they disband Units or leave at is now is or even increase if possible.

Just some Random General Questions, till I get more specific intel

I doubt they even know themselves.

Kevin Rudd is actually a gun nut, which is rare for a labor politician, so maybe he will be more sympathetic to defence spending. But who knows. We'll just have to wait and see.

Rudds Defence policy appears to be (suprisingly) in line with that of the Liberal (Howard) Govt.

Defence spending will continue to increase into the future, as it must. Real growth in this area is essential to maintain the ADF into the future, I am sure (...hopeful) that the Rudd Govt knows this.

As far as their "manner" goes, they are definately more worried about the ADF's more immediate area of operations (SE Asia) than the MEAO. However, the Rudd Govt does support the ADF mission in Afghanistan, and in an expanded role. If the Dutch pull-out however, I will be interested in seeing how dedicated they really are to the mission there. The ADF (Army) could realistically support a larger Brigade sized deployment in A-stan, only if we pull out of Iraq (which the Rudd Govt will do if they win - after one last 6 month rotation of the OBG-W) and possibly lower our Battle Group deployment in Timor Leste.

Equipment purchases will be done with a tighter reign I would imagine, but I think the ADF can expect the same sort of equipment purchases in the future. Defence give Govt an idea of what they want, things are put to RFT (Request for Tender) and the winner is supplied to the ADF. Things will hopefully continue (as they should) in the future.

In regards to disbanding units ? No, they would be completely incompetent if they did that (the current Opposition Defence spokesperson is incompetent however ;)). Realistically more Battalions are needed in the RAR (I would suggest 2 more in the ORBAT) to continue providing support to Coalition operations and support to the ADFs immediate area of operations if the current Op Tempo is kept in place.
