I am a proud Canadian , and I wouldn't want to live in any other country in the world . But I can't under stand some of the decisions that our goverment makes ! more often than not we settle to be mediocre, we never seem to capitalize on any of the ground breaking advancements of our country.
Ex:
(1) The CL-84 was a Canadian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian) V/STOL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V/STOL) turbine tilt-wing monoplane designed and manufactured by Canadair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadair) between 1964 and 1972. Only four of these experimental aircraft were built with three entering flight testing. Two of the CL-84s crashed due to mechanical failures, but no loss of life occurred as a result of these accidents. Despite the fact that the CL-84 was very successful in the experimental and operational trials carried out between 1972 and 1974, no production contracts resulted.
(2) The CL-227 Sentinel is a remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unmanned_aerial_vehicle) (UAV) made by Canadair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadair). It displays a distinctively unusual bulbous hourglass profile. Lift is provided by a paired set of helicopter rotors emanating from the waist of the system.
The prototype of the CL-227 was designed in 1977 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1977_in_aviation), and was made available to NATO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO) allied clients in the early 1980's. In the late 1990's it was replaced by an updated version, the CL-327. Yet despite being used by our nato allies, we never operated this system.
(3) and for the grand daddy of them all the Arrow, now I could go on forever on this so i'll just post a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_arrow
Now what I am interested in if there are any other countries out there that have made as big of F@#k ups as us ??

Every government makes mistakes. Granted, the Arrow was a massive mistake, but thats no reason to hate them. And I assure you, other governments have made far bigger screw-ups.

maybe hate was the wrong word to use but i mean come on ! but i always come back to "what if ?" regardless it was a very large mistake
Meh. We scrapped many more expensive projects than that. Don't need to hate because the gov't is wasteful and inefficient. That just goes with being a gov't.

The Arrow was cancelled because the Russians developed the ICBM. The Arrows purpose to Intercept Russian bombers in the high arctic at a high altitude. The need to send a nuke via bomber wasn't needed anymore. Plus the aircraft would have cost us AFAIK $120something million per plane. But still, we should have sold them to all of the countries that wanted one (and there were a few).

No, the reason the Arrow was scrapped, because some of the people that was working on the project were KGB agents and were giving information about the Arrow to the Soviet's. So they stop working on the project and was later scrapped. Hard to believe, but it really happen and the information about it was released a couple years ago.

As usual MP.net member comes to the rescue with half assed information.
The Avro Arrow was canned because Diefenbaker was elected on the ideas that he was going to put a stop to rampant lieberal spending. Since Avro had told Ottawa they needed an extra 50 some odd million to keep the program on track. Add that in with MND George Pearkes under pressure to sign onto SAGE, which included nuclear tipped anti aircraft missles.
Canada could not afford the Avro program and missile defense. Pearkes chose to go with the NORAD plans for SAGE instead of developing our own fighter/interceptor.
Pearkes discussed these problems and revealed he was advised by an American official, while en route to Colorado, Canada did not need to build aircraft because the US had plenty and could make them available at any time. Pearkes states this is when he made his decision to cancel the Arrow. His dilemma was how to fill in the defence gap from cancellation of the Arrow to the time when Bomarc bases would be operational. He revealed he struck a deal to allow American training in Goose Bay (Labrador) and Cold Lake (Alberta) in exchange for protection.Pressure from the United States of America and Diefenbaker's desire to make good on his anti spending promise killed the Avro Arrow.
You're thoughts that the soviets we're stealing the designs came from the RCMP fear that there was a mole in the company. The only piece of evidence towards this is the words of a ex-kgb soviet who went to MI6 after the fall.
Also, hating the government is perfectly normal. Our political system is a pile of crap which gives joe blow no representation, and politicians are so weak willed they bow to polls from Quebec rather then going through with what they know is the right thing to do to try to buy more votes.

What the hell are talking about. I know that Diefenbaker was against spending on the Arrow and so was the United States, because Avro was trying to sell the aircraft the USAF, but the American aircraft manufacturers were dead set against it. So that's why USAF gave the RCAF McDonnell 66 F-101B & F-101F Voodoos which was less advanced than the Avro Arrow. But the KGB was involved Avro Arrow program trying to get secrets, So that's why those 3 major things killed the Arrow program. But the KGB involvement was just released a few years and tell you the truth it was on the Secret Superpower Aircraft Fighters on the History Channel. So watch it, before criticizes anybody.

The EM2 would have been one hell of a rifle. Lots of growing pains in the beginning though - stoppages, failure to feed, etc. Never had the chance to correct the issues before cancellation for the L1A1.
