According to the Swedish Supreme Commander Håkan Syrén, the Swedish Air Force is struggling to control their airspace because of budget cuts. In the future they may need joint patrolling with FAF to protect their airspace.
WTF! ;)

Hey New Zealand have no airforce...
They basically rely on Australia.
Atleast they have a ****load of distance from everyone else as a good barrier though.

What a pity! One of best european air force is now in such poor condition!
Could this public outcry have something to do with the current planning of the long term defence budget? Noooo.. Of course not. :)
From what I've heard the changes look like this:
JA 37 Viggen would go from ~60 to 0
JAS 39 Gripen would go from 204 to 160.
I mean, it's not that bad. But of course It's quite sad to think that we some 10-15 years ago had ~400 fighters.

Thor, are 160 Gripen enoght to defend the Sweden airspace, arent'?
So why you need the help of finnish airforce smaller and with less capable fighters (F/A-18 C/D) than Sweden?

Well in times of major defence cuts the commander in chief of the swedish armed forces are trying his best stop it.. Going to the papers and tv with this story is one way I guess.
Having in mind that Sweden is not a member of NATO and that we can't be sure of any help we have to plan for the worst case scenario. In an allout war with Russia 160 fighters would'nt be enough.. However, that is'nt very likely nowadays and the politicians have realised that. So, yeah, 160 fighters would be enough for surveillance and to project force into a limited area. Let's say the Baltic Sea or something.
F-18 (the finns don't use them in the attack role) is a quite good plane I would say.

Well, we have the same problem with the exception that at least you Swedish have a better "defence force" in terms of equipment and so on.
Both of our countries are neutral, but the fact is that the Swedish defence force has some powerful equipment when compared to us. Now sure we've got modern stuff as well, but the 60's and 70's gear is not really a surprise around here.
Of course the problem now is the current trend in Sweden that considers a large army to be needless for the future. This affects the Swedish airforce as well, it seems...
Anyway, I think this is a good idea since both of our countries are friendly towards each other and in case of a conflict, what I'd like to see is some sort of a unified defence.
Of course, this whole story might just as well be just a "support stunt" from the Swedish HQ in order to stop the budget cuts and all.
We'll see, we'll see...

Well hell, why wont the swedes sell the "left-over" Gripens to us then p-)
A few dozen planes more wouldn't hurt FAF, would it?
FAF will likely have joint operations with the Swedish Air Force in the future, but I very much doubt Swedish airspace will be defended by Finnish fighters alone. I believe Syrén said that his comment was taken out of context.
There's a good chance that Sweden and Finland will start sharing their airspace picture, though. Good move, if you ask me.

From Finland's point of view, getting some used F/A-18 C/Ds would be nice. Having a completely new system to work on takes a lot of resources.

This was instagated by mustmato so Finland and Sweeden will merge and people would stop being confused about where he is from.

Since i am from sweden i must say from an economically perspective a very smart move....
The only real enemy we have is Russia and if russia were to invade they would have to pass finland first (EU) and to the right we have Norway (NATO) and an invasion from the russians would more or less lead to nuclear war.
But from a diplomatic perspective... BAD
For us to be freeloathing from other forces defences is not good.

Hmm, what did you find "confusing" in his location ?
His citizenship was a rather simple matter, and I must admit yet again that I have a slightly similar situation as he has.
