I love that base, I was attached to Fourth Force Reconaissance Co. from May to Sept '07. I cant beleive that such a nice base exists in the military

That's a good pic of the base! That place has really changed alot...you used to be able to drive across the runway up on the northern end to access the beach;the flightline that has the P-3's on it wasn't there when I was there,it was just a road that paralleled the runway;and back to where the barracks for the airwingers stayed, there was a package store/pizza parlor that was straight acrossfrom barracks # 229-230

That cross-runway beach access is on there, you have to zoom in on Google Earth more to see it though. Its in the middle of those two "turn around areas" between the runway and whatever the road next to the runway is called.

camp schwab is a good place to get stationed too. All those rumors about schwab are mostly false. Its also got some great views, and one of the best beaches on Oki.

Yeah, Schwab is in a really nice area with decent surroundings, but then again you don't have the exciting shenanigans of Kin-Town like Hansen does.

I was at K-Bay 1956-1958, with the air station H&HS. It was an MCAS then and Hawaii had yet to become a state. Got overseas pay then.

I was an air traffic controller. In the picture posted at the top of this forum you'll barely see the control tower, perched on the left corner of the hangar furthest in the distance. That's where I spent my 2 years. The GCA unit was directly across the runway, where the trees are located.

We had 4 fixed wing and 2 helicopter squadrons flying FJ-4's (VMF-232), F2H's (Banshee)(VMF-214), AD5N's (VMC-3) and AD7's/FJ4's (VMF-212). We had a lot of aircraft for such a small flight line. And we were busy with flight ops 5/12.

At the bottom of the above picture is the Special Services boat house. I had the humbling experience of sinking a small sailboat, just adjacent to the middle of the flight line.

Still have some close friends who served with me during those years. It was great base for those of us serving on "the rock". Some great stories about our time there, to share if interested.

I was in 3/3 1976 to 1978, then caught a westpac with 1/3.
Finished my time with 1/3. I was a cook at Anderson hall, which, from the photos and a map of the base I saw, no longer exists. Did they tear all the old barracks buildings down and put up dorms or something?

Couldn't have asked for much better duty. The first year we had four watches and worked one day a week plus one weekend a month. It was more like two days a week really, because we started by taking over serving the lunch meal, did dinner, then breakfast and started lunch on the next day. We were supposed to have training the remainder of the second day, but rarely did. Lots of time spent on the beach along the golf course! The gate onto H-3 wasn't open yet, so we would take a buddies moped and tow us out there on our skateboards, and skate the freeway.

Spent some time at NAS Barbers Point (Now closed).

Kaneohe Bay is on the best side of Oahu near the North Shore.
Great surfing and snorkeling.

I have to agree with you on that. But the condemned barracks are NOT so nice to stay in. Question for you Lava Dogs... are the hot ass looking hookers still walking the strip by Moose McGillycuddy's?

Kbay is nice, I visited there before I joined. Miramar is still the Mecca of the Marine Corps for me, really nice base, chill command without any stupid barracks or libbo rules and awesome surroundings.

So true. The Eastside has Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, Honolulu (short distance away), really nice beaches, and shooting ranges :).

We, on the other hand, have the North Shore and....and.....and.....yeah that's it. But at least we have our own South Central right around the corner.

I cant believe they closed Barbers Point! They had one of the best bars with the cut in half coastie rescue chopper inside, christmas lights, sand volley ball, strong drinks. Always had a blast there.

That hurts as much as The Irish Rose closing. My weapons squad and I lived at that bar. The Army should have just billeted me there.
