That's a good pic of the base! That place has really changed alot...you used to be able to drive across the runway up on the northern end to access the beach;the flightline that has the P-3's on it wasn't there when I was there,it was just a road that paralleled the runway;and back to where the barracks for the airwingers stayed, there was a package store/pizza parlor that was straight acrossfrom barracks # 229-230

That cross-runway beach access is on there, you have to zoom in on Google Earth more to see it though. Its in the middle of those two "turn around areas" between the runway and whatever the road next to the runway is called.

camp schwab is a good place to get stationed too. All those rumors about schwab are mostly false. Its also got some great views, and one of the best beaches on Oki.

Yeah, Schwab is in a really nice area with decent surroundings, but then again you don't have the exciting shenanigans of Kin-Town like Hansen does.

I was at K-Bay 1956-1958, with the air station H&HS. It was an MCAS then and Hawaii had yet to become a state. Got overseas pay then.
I was an air traffic controller. In the picture posted at the top of this forum you'll barely see the control tower, perched on the left corner of the hangar furthest in the distance. That's where I spent my 2 years. The GCA unit was directly across the runway, where the trees are located.
We had 4 fixed wing and 2 helicopter squadrons flying FJ-4's (VMF-232), F2H's (Banshee)(VMF-214), AD5N's (VMC-3) and AD7's/FJ4's (VMF-212). We had a lot of aircraft for such a small flight line. And we were busy with flight ops 5/12.
At the bottom of the above picture is the Special Services boat house. I had the humbling experience of sinking a small sailboat, just adjacent to the middle of the flight line.
Still have some close friends who served with me during those years. It was great base for those of us serving on "the rock". Some great stories about our time there, to share if interested.
