I think they are the two best British generals, but who was the best ?

All I know is that you can eat one and smoke the other.

As a fairly patriotic (unless you as k in public) Brit i know i ought to say Wellington, he did the business against impossible odds.

I have the nagging feeling i need to remember Marlborough, he built the system and won the reputation for victory in Europe Wellington built on.

Moore or Clive would be on my list . But I'll go with Welly because he helped develop the UK's first Elite forces (Riflemen) and had some good staunches in India.

That was 'Black Bob' Crauford - Wellesley had bugger all to do with it other than being the GOC.

I agree with you about Wellesley over Marlborough though.

My favorite British military leader of the 20th Century is Slim. Very underrated.

Don't know much about Marlborough (John Churchill) other than that he was a direct ancestor of Winston Churchill.

Don't know much about Marlborough (John Churchill) other than that he was a direct ancestor of Winston Churchill.

He has a lot in common with Wellington, from a reputation for minimising casualties and manouvering rather than fighting and using diplomatic command of mixed national forces, then finishing their reputations off with a real meatgrinder of a battle, Wellington at Waterloo and Marlborough at Malplaquet!
