Hi guys,

I noticed in some of the pictures of Op Nimrod on the Iranian Embassy Siege that quite a large number of assault team carried the Browning HP 9mm with a magazine extension.

How many rounds does this allow you to carry in the magazine

I think these are 20-round mags.
The basic mag has a 13-round capacity(+one in the spout).
The HP mag with the largest capacity as far as I know is a 30-round mag.

The 20 round magazine was a standard FN production item - I bought one over the counter in a London gun shop in 1979. There was nothing whatsoever which was "SAS exclusive" about them.

And they use extended mags on their 226s these days too

As has already been said the standard extended mags have a 20 round capacity, but I also sourced 15 round mags for my Hi-Power way back when, but can't remember where I got them. They fit flush in the mag well, but came with an extended magazine shoe that will allow you to load 17 rounds.

When I found them I was well chuffed that I could have the same capacity as all the Glock fans, but in my slim Hi-Power. p-)

A mate of my dad had an German chap who used to make mags for the WW2 German armaments industry make him up a 30 round mag for his 9mm pistol. He did it by hand, hammering it out with hand-tools!
OK, nothing to do with this thread, but it reminded me of this straight away.

Johnsy

Why is the High Power called the High Power? It uses 9mm right? I bet it's a solid weapon, but I don't see the connection.

They were 20 round mags.

They were available to pretty much any one who carried a BHP in civvies (right down to guys like the Royal Signals riggers in NI - not that I mean to downplay the work that they did - apart from the tit that wrote the SAS wannabe book) as well as SF units.

A 20 rounder would be nice, Ive got 2 13's and they're not too bad. Another great JMB design and the first double stack pistol produced, the BHP is a great gun with a long service life

CDNN (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/sig229mm20ex.html) has the 20rnd SIG mags in stock, but no BHPs.....

I have a Luger M-90, which is basically a Browning High Power clone. It also has a 13 round magazine and there is an optional 20 round extended magazine on the market as well. Am I right in assuming the Browning HP and Luger M-90 mags are perfectly interchangeable?

IIRC the Model 90 has the safety on the slide, but is otherwise identical to the BHP? I know the BHP mags are fully compatible with the Luger M-80, so would hazard a guess that they'd also fit the Model-90 with no problems.

Thanks Playtym

No problem. You looking at picking up some those K-Mags from your local firearm dealer?

Not really, maybe, not sure yet..p-)

I was wondering ... is the 20 round extended mag particularly difficult to fill or load the more rounds you put in? And the 30 round?

I never really noticed that much difference filling my 20rd mag., never seen a 30rd. version.

Thanks .... just wondering wether getting 20 rounds in would get more difficult due to the magazine spring compression.

I've also never seen nor heard of the 30 round mag, but I stand under correction. If so, it must stick out past the grip pretty far....

The 20Rd. mag is well enough known from SAS Op. Nimrod pix etc. I'm guessing the 30rd would be considerably longer and thus more cumbersome.

I have never used the 30rd mag but saw it in a store here in Belgium that sells them. They indeed look cumbersome.
The mags we get issued are the standard 13rd mags of Italian manufacture.
On the back you can see how many rounds are in it and on the bottom is a small clip that makes the mag fly out when the mag release is pressed. The standard FN mags are difficult for a fast reload. They come out just a little and have to be taken out by hand.

Do you still have the magazine safety fitted to the pistol? I removed mine, and never had trouble with the magazines ejecting properly.

Yes, I still do. Since it is my service issue firearm I am forbidden to modify anything whatsoever, except putting Pachmayr grips instead of the issue ( crappy) plastic ones.
If I could Iīd add tritium sightsh, lighten the trigger and put a decent new coating on it, but itīll probably never happen :(

Ah, yes, you can't go fiddling with issue weapons. :|
