Palestinians die and streets are blown up as troops search for remains of victims of bomb attack

Israeli forces yesterday left a trail of destruction in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City, blowing up homes and streets as they retreated following an agreement to recover the body parts of six soldiers killed earlier this week.

In the Rafah refugee camp, at the southern end of the Gaza Strip, at least 12 Palestinians were killed and scores wounded as troops searched for the remains of five soldiers blown up by Palestinian fighters. The bodies were ripped apart and spread across a wide area.

Israel closed internal checkpoints, leaving thousands of Palestinians stranded and making it impossible for aid workers and journalists in Gaza to assess the effect of the Israeli incursion in Rafah. Journalists were refused permission to enter the Gaza Strip.

The remains of six soldiers killed in Gaza City on Tuesday were returned to Israel under an agreement brokered by Egypt.

For the first time in two days, the residents of Zeitoun were able to leave their homes and survey the damage caused by two days of fighting.

Four hundred metres of dual carriageway had been systematically blown up. All the street furniture - lamp posts, electricity poles, telephone booths, trees and water tanks - had been knocked down. The street was lined with burned out cars, walls had been punched out with explosives and only shards of glass hung from window frames.

However, despite the destruction, many Palestinians considered the Israeli withdrawal from the area to be a victory.

One man negotiating mounds of ploughed-up tarmac and pools of mud and water said: "They came here. We did not go to them.

"We want nothing from them. This is a great victory for the resistance.

"Our people were just defending themselves. We have no intention of being terrorists."

An eight-storey apartment block, close to where the Israeli troop carrier was blown up, had been flattened. Its owner, Salman Hajer, had built the flats to house his family. His crime was to be the owner of the building closest to where the troop carrier had been blown up.

He said: "This building was the result of 40 years' work. It was meant to be the home for my sons and their families. They have destroyed my life but I don't care.

"The price I paid does not matter. They were punished for a change."

Yesterday, as an Israeli gunboat fired repeatedly at the Gaza City coastline, funeral procession after funeral procession marched through Zeitoun and the city centre. Each body was accompanied by chanting and cheering crowds and orators whose declamations lifted the passions of the crowds.

"The children of the Zionists have retreated. We did not return the remains of their bodies until they withdrew from Zeitoun. This is our victory. We have defeated them," said one orator.

Graffiti lauded Fawzi al-Madhun, a 33-year-old tailor and Islamic Jihad activist, as the man who planted the bomb that blew up the troop carrier. He was killed as he attempted to plant another bomb on Wednesday.

At his funeral there was a cloud of the black flags of Islamic Jihad and dozens of masked gunmen. "Do not shoot your rifles," said an orator. "We need all our bullets for the enemy." The gunmen ignored him and fired off volleys as they set off to the cemetery.

"He was fighting because he wants to protect us. They came here to kill us. We did not go to them. We are human beings - we are not animals. Where do you want us to go to live? Give us a solution. We want to live. We want our children to live like other children," said a cousin.

Paul McCann, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said that in 48 hours in Zeitoun, 15 people had been killed and 226 injured. Sixteen families had been made homeless and a further 32 families had had their homes damaged. He said it was not yet possible to asses the damage in Rafah.

Israeli posters: Knowing this, that your fellow countrymen will go after your remains if you have fallen, does this change your outlook on going into a fight or skirmish ? The comradary between the Israeli soldiers must be unbelievably good.

Nothing will revenge the murder of 4 little girls age 2 to 11 and their pregnant mother by the Palestinian beasts.

In case the news was censored in your region - a walking beast, aka "human" by some Europeans, shot 4 little girls and their pregnant mother from close range a few days ago near Gaza.

Any attempt to explain this action will make you as "human" as those beasts...

It is good, although Ehud Barak's attempt to ruin that by leaving a bleeding soldier to die a few years ago.

We got over that incident , and yes - comradary between the Israeli soldiers is unbelievably good.

This is how the war in Israel is fought. It's very personal, and very deadly.

Job well done.
The only way to deal with terrorists is brutality and cruelty - those are the only things they understand.

It was just published in Israel that the Palestinians used U.N ambulances to mobilize body parts of IDF soldiers they found.

Go U.N!!! - keep helping terrorists to extort Israel, it's one of the only things you are actually good at in the past few years :bash:

Which makes the suggestion that the UN could place soldiers in a buffer zone between arabs & Israel ridiculous. The resident UN people carry out their role in a manner which suits their own political outlook.
The Pals have used general ambulances before in order to transport terrorists and weapons, there is nothing they would not do.

Can someone explain me what was purpose of this act except pure wandalism? Since I hardly see any military explanation for such act...

And you still wonder why palestinians hate you so much...

I have a perfect military explanation. The APC that was blown up was carrying about 100kg of explosives, destined for blowing up the tunnels. Add that to the IED (also about 100kg) and you can get the idea of the explosion that occured there.

I know that your brain is the size of the brain in the creature in your avatar but if it had not escaped your attention on the daily news, the area being damaged is a war zone. Israel always takes it's wars to the doorstep of it's enemies, that way less of it's own citizens die - clever that.

I dont think many Israelis doubt the reasons why the Pals hate them, and whatever was on offer to the Pals in Oslo thet rejected by violence as Arafat took a gamble and made a big mistake.

I strongly believe that the only weapon against fanatical terrorists is fanatical cruelty against them.

Today Israel has very good methods to deal with terrorists, and probably the longest experience in continous counter-terror warfare. You are a terrorist, you will be killed and your house will be destroyed and bulldozed. As easy as that.
Quoted above are my opinions, for which I have been even called a nazi by some people. So as you see I fully support iron-fist methods against terrorists. But what does it supposed to mean:

I know that your brain is the size of the brain in the creature in your avatar
I don't agree with Marmot's point of view on this problem, but he is not a terrorist for Christ sake :(

Well, I posted my opnion towards the Israeli/Palestine conflict in a similar thread yesterday, but in this case I understand that the Israelis want to get the earthly remains of their soldiers back.

The story of ambulances being used for military duties by the palestinians makes me mad. All sides in any conflict should respect the Geneva-Conventions. Using ambulances as a decoy or military transport is just as bad as shooting at an ambulance.

Well if it's not revering to the massiv explosion from the vehicle. But at the Rafah crossing. Than it's widening the Philadelfia road so terrorists can shoot at vehicles on the road.
Anyway often palies build a lot of houses but these are emty. saw a lot of them. And then they claim the land while it's not legaly constructed and bought.

The palestinians are a verry people and they are driffen by hate teaching terrorists. So in order to really make peace these terrorists must leave.
Because, and I can tell from my own experince, palies not under hate teaching are really nice guy's and can be good friends.

All I wonder about is how stupid can one be.

-There are tunnels - which need to be found (because they are using them to bring more explosivs and missiles)

-THe road is narrow - making it wider will pervent them from putting explosivs near the road (A military issue no doubt, only you can not understand it)

If a person is allowing terrorists to hide in his house he should be surprised when it's gone.
