Are the turrets on tanks and other armoured vehicles bolted down by some means to the main chassis or are they kept on by gravity? Sorry for not being too clear.
They sit on the turret race... think sitting on ball bearing track.

I believe the LAV is the same way as the M1A2

However, if you look at the Sherman, from World War 2, the turret ring was integrated into the hull and the the turret was then bolted to the ring...

What are the turrets like on humvees? The ones that actually spin around, not just a gun on a bi-pod bolted to the roof.
Also on armoured vehicles, how do they get their heads out of the hatch? Does the seat just move up and down? When ever I see pictures it looks like it would be too hight to reach your head out. I've always wondered how they do it. ;)

on a humvee the turret is a ring bolted onto the roof of the chassis, so you can swivel around. on armored vehicles, to get your head out of the hatch you just sit up or stand up. i'm not too familiar with the TC's seat on an abrams, but on the loader side you can just stand up on somethin. you try not to stand up past your nametag most of the time, regardless of how cool it looks on pics or visibility issues, mainly for safety concerns.
