I wonder if the Gerber Multi Plier 600 BluntNose Tool is an official issue item for any unit (NSN No. 5110-01-346-5341) or just as bought by GIs on own? Anyone?

Not too sure on the blunt nose, but the black needle nose (600) is on general issue with the Canadian Forces (or atleast that's what I was issued).

I was issued one, but not sure if that was typical or unit purchase. Not everyone got one.
Got issued one too, but broke. Not the best quality.

Blunt nose Gerbers are hard to find these days. Atleast in my area. That is what I have been told.
my unit issued me a blunt nose gerber before its attachments broke off. i use a leatherman super tool 200 now. have had it for 6 years with only minimal breakage as far as the tip of the pliers and my screw driver

Only problem I've had with my Gerbers (I have 3 or 4) is I broke one of the jaws off the pliers on one--changing out a Humvee engine (that is a pain in the ass, by the way--made me glad I wasn't a mechanic!)
But, mailed it to Gerber and they sent me a new one, free.

My unit issued everyone one before we deployed in 2005.
It was not a quality tool by any means...stick with Leatherman for sure.

Buy a Leatherman. I have used mine for 8 years now and have purchased the new Wave with the bits. NICE!! Gerbers are not quality. you can bet I use and abuse mine.

my unit is trying to get these in at the moment they have just got maglights headbands head torches etc and now are trying to get the gerber. i used to have a leathermans and it was a fab bit of kit. gutted when i lost it.
i trust leatherman alot more than i trust gerber, i havent been let down by my leatherman yet. seems gerbers are made out of softer metal and tend to break easier

I have a Gerber automatic multi-tool. One of the locks for the attachments came loose. My leatherman is about 9 yrs old and has been used and abused and is still GTG.

I don't know if they're issued, but pity anyone who does have to use one as Gerber multi tools are sh1te. I've heard many reports of them failing and personally saw my mucker break one of the jaws off his while he was doing some lightweight work with the tool.
Go Leatherman or Victorinox Swisstool.
It seems I'm not the only one who has had crap expereince with Gerber tools...

I'm not sure why everyone dislikes the Gerbers so much. I've had a 600 Series multi-tool for over 2 years now and have beat the hell outta it, and haven't once had a problem.

Reading the thread would explain why.

Well from my vast experience with such tools and use of them. In the field, in emergencies and at the shop I can tell you for a fact they are junk. People have given me Gerbers for gifts and such over the years and they are all in the junk drawer in my shop. I have two Leathermans and one has been all over the world, used on the fly to fix things on electric transit buses, electric HMMWV's, turbines, cars, trucks, ect... . Most of the time it would be the only tool I use. So throw that Gerber in your junk drawer and get you a long time friend, a Leatherman.
That Dupont shyat is a problem too.p-)

test a gerber vs. a leatherman in a tough tool marathon, leatherman is one tough tool, made out of stainless steel and hard as **** to break...believe me i have tried. i wasnt even trying when i broke my gerber, i was trying to turn a screw to get the door panel in my truck back in and the thing snapped in half.

I've been using my Wave for 2 years now, and its never let me down, the only problem I've had is the tiny screwdriver bit broke in half one day but I have an extra somewhere so its no big deal. Other then that it's worked flawlessly.
I've only heard bad things about the Issued gerbers we get, mostly from blades, and screwdrivers snapping.
Also my dad has a SOG Paratool , or a similar design and hes had it for like 8-9 years with no problems.

Is it true that every US Army Ranger is issued a leatherman tool? Does anybody know which one?

CF gets issued SOG's instead of Gerbers now. Supposedly the gerbers have a problem when you try to ground them. Because of the slide. So the SOG's are apparently better for crimping det's and such.

I have had the same experience with them, I have a few of them of different generations.
This is one I have had for the last 10 years, always given good service, I've only broken one tool, the Tin opener (curse)

Oh? Is that a deployment only thing? or are they fully replacing the Gerbers in stores?
