Could the U.S. Ever Be Occupied?

Recent events in Iraq reminded me that there are several nations that have been occupied in the last hundred years; some more than once. Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Holland, Palestine and Japan are but a few. In some countries, resistance forces rose up and fought back, most countries, though, just surrendered without any resistance.

What if the U.S. had lost WWII and had been occupied by the Germans and Japanese? Or what if an unforeseen future enemy defeats the U.S.? Would Americans fight back, or give in?

Of course, they would fight. I don't say that because I saw "Red Dawn," which was more a teenager's combat wet dream than reality, but because of the country's history and infrastructure.

Also, I can't imagine any occupation force being able to take on Hell's Angels, L.A. gangbangers, the Mafia and the VFW all at the same time ;)

I dont think a country like the US could be occupied without the enemy using nuclear weapons. It is too large an area with too much military strength for it to be defeated in a conventional war leading to a un-resisted occupation.

I dont see it being to feasable. First off, they'd have to cross the Atlantic or the Pacific. A flotilla that size would be picked up be satellites before it even left port. I dont think we'd need nukes. The Navy and Air Force would ravage them on the crossing. If they make it across the oceans, the Army and Marines would be waiting at all possible landing areas. Even if they did somehow break through all of this, they would face a huge fight at every single city and town they rolled up to.

Of course the USA can be invaded. They are not safe just becuase they are separated from the rest of the world by the Pacific and Atlantic ocean.

What some of you guys think is that the United States of America is going to last forever. It wont. It can't. And will not.

What any intelligent human being will notice while fast flipping through any history book is a pathern. That pathern is called change.

Most countries and Empires throughout the world have gone through a lot of changes. None of these countries has stayed the same for more than a couple of centuries.

Of course, as the situation is now, the USA stay safe. Even if all the nations in the world combined, could not succsessfully invade the USA.
Some changes are needed. And those changes lay within the USA.

This is quite interesting, for those that are in to alternative history. What would and could happen if this and that occured?

First, what we need is a total cllapse of the USA we know today. Say that some states chosed to secede from the Union. And others followed. A lot of things can happen within the USA. Like civil unrest. Racial unrest. Ecohnomic unrest.
If a "new" civil war were to fall upon the USA it's country would then lay more open for a foreign invasion.

When this will ever happen, is for the future to know. But remember. You are actually been a super power for the last 100 year almost. Only a 100 to go. ;)

the U.S. has no better ally than Canada, even if we didnt go to war with Iraq, and they know that. Our relationship is the largest trade relationship in the world as well.

It said they send 60 divisions across the berring straight into alaska. they rolled trhough canada and sent in paratroopers masked as commercial airlines. Mexico fell to the communists and they flowed across that border. What do u guys think?

I think our size would be a BIG factor ... mosts countries that have been occupied in the past have been the size of one of our larger states and we got 49 of those (hawaii doesnt count sence its not part of conus :P ) and the fact that Canada and the US are so close they'd help us out ;)
So hell who ever invades better have enough troops to occupy the whole of North America...
Then the factor that each state has its own milita (NG units) and thats not counting our standing military. You can't forget all our gun love'n citizens who would also put up some fight...

I think an attempted invasion is possible but not an occupation (at least rite now in current times)... Unless some form of WMD is used.

I dont think any army in the world could ever occupy the US. Its just too much land to hold onto. Forces would be stretched very thin. Also, unlike Iraq, most of the US is built up cities and towns. Not deserts or mountains with few people. Plus the fact that the US has the strongest army in the world. Also we have some 22,000 airfields in the US. even if you hit the main ones, theres still a couple thousand airfields that could be used.

The logistics and numbers needed to take and hold the US would just be too large.
