China World's Largest Source of Counterfeit and Pirated Products

Trade experts say China is the largest source of counterfeit and pirated products in the world--and the problem is growing.

The Motion Picture Association of America estimates about 95 percent of all DVDs sold in China are pirated, costing the industry $280 million last year. The industry group representing the major Hollywood studios says it has warned Beijing of an increasingly restless US Congress and possible trade consequences if China does not do more to fight piracy.

Pirated DVDs often appear on the streets just days after a movie's theatrical release, with disks costing around $1 each.

The problem of intellectual property theft goes well beyond pirated DVDs. The list of products being counterfeited in China ranges from clothing to golf clubs to toilets to motorcycles. Electronics components may be the hardest knock-offs to identify because of their small size.

The Office of the Unite States Trade Representative says Beijing is failing to uphold its WTO obligations to combat the piracy of intellectual property, costing the US economy billions of dollars every year.

Acting Assistant US Trade Representative Victoria Espinel says the agency is "frustrated" with China's approach to intellectual property theft, nearly four years after the country joined the World Trade Organization.

She says Chinese authorities are not enforcing intellectual property laws, and have done little to crack down on counterfeiters. So, she says the US trade office is examining all of its options including international litigation.

"We are committed to ensuring that China is compliant with its obligations, and we will take WTO action if we determine this is the most effective way to fix the problem that we are resolved to fix," she recently told a reporter.

A WTO case against China could result in tariff sanctions.

Trade experts testifying before the Congressional panel added that American companies who buy cheaper Chinese products, often made with counterfeit parts, are fueling the problem.

China has a copy culture - no sht sherlock !

It's part of Asian think to keep re-inventing the wheel

The Japanese were doing this all the time during the 60s and 70s, pirating cassettes, ripping of US computer designs, ccorporate espionage, copying radios and stealing the designs European automobiles

Then South.Korea got in on the act spying on US companies during the 80s and suddenly companies like Daewoo, EnergyGizer, Samsung, Hyundai were popping up all over the place.

Now that the big Chicom has got in on the act - alarm bells are finally staring to ring.

Do you wanna say South Korea's national flag is the copy of Chinese tranditional graph of Ying Yang? :-))
By the way the four surounding binary expressions were originally from Chinese Zhou Yi as well.

Holy cr4p that's the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. The article and pics is of well known brands because obviously the reader wouldn't know about the small brands. There's loads of upstarts, family businesses and inventors who invest their own time and money just to see their designs flat out stolen by Chinese manufacturers after a trade show, early exports or other presentations so I suggest you study the problem !

Because those big corporations are sued by customers who bought goods that are in fact copies. It bring a bad reputation to those compagnies and they loses sales.

Good for you as a customer you said? A few people in America died poisoned because the toothpaste they bought was filled with toxic products. It also happened in luxurious hotels.

A tea shop in England received many complaints about the quality of his tea. An analyse showed that his tea was made of tree bark....Hmmm tasty!

Or lately, all the toys that Mattel backordered because they were filled with lead.

Germany’s ADAC automotive regulatory body has given China’s Brilliance BS6 sedan a poor one-star rating in its latest round of crash tests. This is the car that Brilliance was hoping would convince European buyers that the Chinese brand was capable of building a truly world class car, but these latest results are very unnerving.

After conducting both head-on and side impact tests, with the vehicle traveling at 64km/h, the ADAC revealed that the BS6’s safety cell was too soft and that the A-pillar pushed too far into the cabin. Also, the steering wheel was pushed to side, rendering the airbag next to useless, and the pedals penetrated 32cm into the cabin as well. In the post crash assessment, the car’s body was so mangled that the doors could only be opened with heavy equipment.

The car’s German importer is unsatisfied with the results and claims that it should be retested and that another session will be conducted in July. Meanwhile the cars will remain on sale. So far, approximately 350 cars have been sold in Germany through four dealers.

**** that!
And I see more and more people in France buying those cheap Chinese SUVs and are proud of them like if they were Grand Cherokees limited or Hummer while they don't cost more than a Cavalier or Focus...
I can't believe they passed the approbation to be sold (and more importantly driven) in Europe.
Funnily enough, we don't see any in the U.S (yet), I wonder when they will start appearing.

Hmm, you have a point here about the dangers to your health. Bur really, considering the whole variety and quantity of goods that are produced in China, this sort of thing is expected to happen, whether the goods are counterfit or not. It should be remembered that most of these businesses are keen to make money and generate repeat business, thus it won't be in their interests to have dangerous or unsuitable products, although many will get through anyway.

The reliability of Chinese cars and about any vehicle of transportation is questionable. The main reason they're ****ty is that they pinch the every last penny out of the project with cheap crappy materials and often hastily done finish. They will improve in time, but the copying is what i find arrogant and rude. I hope some trade sanctions are implied on Chinese corporations over this nonsense. They should be ashamed that their country which used to start all the greatest innovations up until the 15th century has now settled for just blatantly copying the work of others.
