Before yall say, "You get what you pay for," bear with me! p-)
Say I wanted to pick up a MOLLE platform for just shooting in the desert as a place to carry magazines, miscellaneous items, etc. (you can only carry so many mags in your pockets) Would something from CTD be a good choice? I'm looking at a really affordable MOLLE rig on their website right now and I don't forsee myself using this particular platform for any other purpose than just recreational shooting. Do you think it'll still fall apart on me if I'm not out there rolling around in the dirt?

I'd sooner get a USGI surplus or new ALICE rig.
H or Y LBE suspenders, web belt, pouches, butt pack, canteen pouches, and you're set...and it will still more than likely be able to fill more roles than some airsoft quality MOLLE rig.
Death.

Their MOLLE stuff isn't that bad.

I picked up their ~$30 chest rig ( link (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MOLLE137-44933-1978.html?pcs=MOLLE137) ). I haven't deployed, but I put it through Annual Training (live fire squad attack, 2 air assault/MOUT ops, crawling through northern Florida's swampy jungles) and it shows no signs of wear.
You might wanna add an extra utility pouch or two (only ~$8 each, pictured at right) for general storage. The rig has some nifty internal document pockets but really I've found all but the top one difficult to reach under most circumstances.

I'd agree with USMC Tanker on this one. I have no experience of CTD and their products, but general experience and common sense would say that some ex military surplus would be best, and cheapest.
I know I'm speaking from a UK perspective, but I think civvies who shoot ought to try and distance themselves from the military or paramilitary organisations in the way they dress. It's just something that puts others at ease if they see someone with a rifle, if that person is decked out with 'tactical' kit they may get a little unnerved. If the shooter is wearing jeans and a jacket with a shoulder bag, then it looks a little more innocent. That's just my opinion though.
On that note, a lot of lads out in Afghanistan and Iraq use things called 'car bags', they are a shoulder bag with a few magazine pockets on the outside and a main compartment for other bits and bobs (maps, radios, med kit etc). Many have a top flap that covers the mag pockets when not in use to make them look less conspicuous. Perhaps that is an option for you?
Isn't something like this: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MOLLE714-56193-1977.html
Ideal for recreational shooting? I can't see it falling apart if you're just going out in the desert shooting.

Yeap that's pretty much it. Simple and quick. Or I might just get a dump pouch on my belt but I got like three different kinds of mags to deal with and I don't want to go fishing for them. I only asked because I've had all sorts of stuff break on me for no reason whatsoever. I guess that's expected when its chicom stuff,
Thanks much guys!

How about a surplus LBV from ebay? They're only around $15 in most places.

Agreed with Tanker.
I sold those for a long time (CTD products... also Condor, a few other names), and they're crap. You would really be best off with a nice inexpensive set of ALICE gear. If you go out shooting in the Mojave like us, something like two triple M16 mag pouches, two canteen pouches, and an assbag/buttpack and you should be set. If you shoot shotguns, you can just cut the dividers out of the M16 pouches and fit a buncha shells in there.
