I was not big on the Pistols at the time but they don't seem half bad these days I liked some of the other bands around at the time like the Skids, Undertones, Dammned and the Stranglers. Despite my broad musical tastes I am still an old Goth at heart but oddly enough listening to Sparx while typing this.:D

Non of them, The Damned released the first real punk song with "New Rose," although some people say Helter Skelter by The Beatles was the first real punk song. But really what is punk?

Edit: Sorry GrantT, did not see your response...

No one really knows who "started" Punk. Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, the Velvet Underground, and the Dolls of New York, etc. displayed some aspects of punk, but no band combined all of the elements, until the Ramones gathered in 1975. Don't forget about Black Flag and the Circle Jerks.

I think that the idea of "mainstream punk music" is a joke, but it is without a doubt my favorite genre of music. I don't see how anyone could possibly air the true punk message when they're sitting in their mansion or riding in their Ferrari. Also, keep in mind that it's not "true" punk when the band is so blatant about it and actually tells about it, like Good Charlotte in the song "Young and Hopeless", or Simple Plan in general.

Look at how badly Green Day was treated upon their return to Oakland, as they were receiving death threats all the time becuase they were "sellouts" and did away with everything they sing about. In today's music anyone can get the right sound and make the crowd move around a bit, but it has to be the true musicians who speak about their background indirectly through their lyrics and dynamics in their songs that can truly be labeled "punk".

That's just my two cents, but then again, I'm living in the 3rd richest country in the US, so who am I to talk about punk, eh?

punk:
An attitude, a way of life, emphasising on individuality and equality. It ain't about mohawks and wearing feckin spikes, its about being yourself and not some second-rate version of someone else. Its about living up to the ideals of the punk attitude....any questions?

Punk suck ass... ehhhh juniors what do U know....... You know sh*t about how it was to participate in the biggest and only Commie Block Rock/Punk festival in 1984 (85 & 86 too) ... with 20 000 people gathered in one place and few thousand anti riot Commie police around... BN here and did some pics... I won't forget this... heavy bitter music, crowd of strange dressed people, pogos, freedom... all this in the shadow of the itchy fingers police that was just waiting for a excuse to enter...
