View Full Version : SASR weaponary
Do they have the same armory system like the original british SAS so that they could pick any weapons that work best for their operations? Could they made their own purchase so that they could bring in their favourite weapon into the battlefield? ( I've seen some American regular soldiers carrying their own rifles, but not sure whether it's allowed in other countries)

oh dear....
Australian soldiers will not carry personal (as in personally owned) weapons.
And as for "purchasing" their own weapons.... In Australia, (the general rule) is you can't buy a semi-auto centrefire rifle. So there's not much point in a soldier buying their own weapon even if they are allowed to carry private firearms.

I believe you're misinformed. A similar question came up a week or so ago.
If you weren't issued the weapon, you won't carry it.

american soldiers carry their assigned weapons with them, but for the most part they do not carry their personal fire arms with them when they deploy unless there is proper documentation from a certifying official that they can do so. If they choose to do this then they would not be allowed to bring their personal firearm back into the states with them. they would have to turn it in to the amnesty point and have it destroyed, which is what happens in most cases. l know that what you probably see is modifications that american soldiers have done to their rifles to make them work for them but in my experience these guys do not own their own rifles that they take over there. the modifications have to be approved by their commander unless it's one of the guys that works in groups that are above special forces. just my 2 cent

There are rules regarding use of non-standard weapons (eg foreign weapons). From memory, authority for use needs to come from higher up like formation commanders, except for SF where it can be authorised by the unit CO.

Ever seen the inside of an SAS armory? I haven't either but I'm willing to bet they don't need to look much farther than that when needing a weapon. And so what if soldier A likes his G3, B his SIG 550, C his Diemaco, and D prefers an 870. Alot of good that'll do. Think in terms of logistics and KISS. Keep the ammo same, mags same, etc... Might find yourself needing extra ammo real fast.

Some people from our SF actually kept their basic issued firearms, but also carried some other un-issued with them (normally packed in their Humvee) such as FN FAL, G3's, AK's (especially with drum mags), SVD's - they used them occassionally when there was need for something reaching farther and harder than issue 5,56 or certain other means. I may add there were some plans of adapting snatched SPG-9 and KPW HMG on Humvee mount but as far as I know it wasn't done in the end.

Granted, when in a vehicle mounted patrol you would be able to stow a sniper rifle or something heavier hitting. But on a 4-6 man recce I doubt you're going to want to have half the patrol or more carrying whatever they want.

Stupid Question: were those weapons brought in country, or were they confiscated locally?

One of the forum members smuggled in a G3 to Iraq, if you dig back far enough you'll find it.
IIRC he was in some vehicle mounted anti-armour unit, and smuggled it in in spare barrel bags from M249's.
But yeah, officially it's not meant to happen. p-)

Wouldn't that be a bit like smuggling cocaine into Colombia? ;)

They were obtained locally in various armouries or palaces (there were gilded versions too).
