Cable modem? (speed)

I've got cable but today and in the past few days the internet has been very slow(todays is like 56k slow). What kinds of things effect speed?

The amount of hard drive space?

Anything I can do to speed things up?

Know any sites that you can point me to that could help?

HMMM.... well you wanna make sure you dont have tons of **** running on your pc in the background.... but even then with cable it wouldnt really slow you down that much. Like my neighbor has running in the background AIM, MSN, YAHOO, Winzip, Winamp, close all the unneccesary progs.

Mabey its slow because the people in your area are downloading alot...A friend of mine he left his Kazaa running for like a week, and hundreds of people were downloading of him and it slowed down the internet in the city (pop. 18 000), eventually some guys from SHAW (ISP) showed up at his place and told him to shut down his Kazaa because it was slowing down the server for the city.

turn off everything, then reset you cable modem, let it start up. once you have a signal, boot up your [router first, if you have one and then your] computer. be sure to clean your internet cache from time to time.

My connection suck donkey nuts since the time I installed home wireless network. Hey, at least I can browse **** on my laptop while BBQ in the back yard.
