From what I have seen around this awesome site, is that the 3ID has its custom ACU helmet cover, with its Division patch on it, now I my question is do the patch go on both sides of the helmet or just one sided? I can tell from the pictures because they are always taken from the sides or the front.
I can't see whats going on the side. Just want some clarification.
thanks in advance.

Right Side^
I used to see pictures with them on left side as well...Im thinking there is no set policy or SOP, probably just buy the patch and slap it on whatever side you want?

I have noticed this before, never knew why though. Intresting.
Ever thought they have two patches, one on each side.

its on both sides. per sop with their divison. something from ww2 when they put their unit patches on their steel pots. some other units are doing this also. 36th id is one of them... ng unit

there is always a SOP specially in units like that with regs like that, id say its on both sides, logical choice

The 101st Airborne guys use card symbols (spade, club, heart, diamond) on their helmets. It goes back to WWII, and I believe it is to designate regiments or brigades. I'm sure there is an airborne trooper here who can confirm that, or a quick Google search might turn up the answer.

I was with the 502nd Infantry of the 101st when I was on active duty. We wore the hearts on both sides of our ACU helmet cover. Heres a list of what each brigade wears.
327th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/327th_Glider_Infantry_Regiment): Clubs (♣)
501st (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501st_Parachute_Infantry_Regiment): Diamonds (♦) 501st Infantry Regiment is part of the 4th Brigade (ABN), 25th Infantry Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/25th_Infantry_Division) in Alaska. They continue to wear the Diamond on there helmet covers still.
502nd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/502d_Parachute_Infantry_Regiment): Hearts (♥)
506th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/506th_Parachute_Infantry_Regiment_%28United_States%29): Spades (♠)
187th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/187th_Infantry_Regiment): Torii (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torii) (Presently used; not during World War II, when the 187th Infantry Regiment was part of the 11th Airborne Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11th_Airborne_Division).)

Thanks, Wolf. I think the Torii is also the symbol for the rakasan, right? It is supposed to be a Japanese word for umbrella; that is how the Japanese referred to the parachutists.
