View Full Version : German Vice Chancellor resigns
Supposedly for private reasons, Franz Müntefering, the last major supporter of the currently governing coalition within his party, has resigned today as Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. Apparently, the current chairman of the SPD and Minister president of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck, will replace him. Beck is rather an opponent of the coalition.
After the recent arguments especially when it comes to social issues, the collapse of the Grand Coalition seems to be due.
What do you, especially the German members here, think about the latest occurrences?
edit
It seems now that Olaf Scholz will become Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. However, the SPD's last major coalition supporter has gone now.

The SPD once again changed their weight to the left, this will tear apart the coalition sooner or later. Müntefering knows that and doent want to play the Buffer, because he isnt able to stop the disintegration of the Goverment anyway.

they talk about socialism, since 1990 in german basic law(constitution) its written that we have social market economy
so they openly show in their party program that they are anti constitutional, I wonder why the constitutional court hasn´t yet been asked to ban SPD
I am all for banning dirty socialist scum!

Allthough I almost never agreed with him politically, he has may deepest respect for being a husband that chose to stand by his women`s side during her very serious and possibly fatal illness.
As for the future of the grandcoalition, with Mr. Müntefering gone, it has become more probable that the coalition will end before 2009, what wouldn`t be to bad.
Let`s see how the (regional) elections in early 2008 will go and we will know more.
I think we will see Mr. Steinmeier running for the SPD in the next Bundestagswahl instead of Mr. Beck.

That's a candidate I'd elect. Maybe. Optionally.
