MONTREAL - Three people, including a mother and son, pleaded not guilty on Saturday to charges related to the firebombing of a Jewish elementary school.
Simon Zogheib and Sleiman Elmerhebi, both 18, are charged with arson and conspiracy. The mother of one of the accused, Rouba Fahd Elmerhebi, 36, is charged with being an accessory after the fact.
All three, who were accompanied in their brief video court appearance by two lawyers, opted for trial by judge and jury.
They'll remain in custody until a bail hearing on Monday.
Prosecutor Marie-Josee Theriault argued the trio should be kept behind bars "to make sure the accused would be back in court, to ensure the security of the public and to maintain public confidence in the judicial system."
Montreal police arrested five people early Friday in connection with the April 5 fire and spent most of the day questioning them.
