this BS comment will either cause flames or a locked topic. I dont wish for either.
The reason the Russian soldiers have this so called "poor" appearance to the Western eyes, is because RUSSIA WILL NEVER BE LIKE ANYONE ELSE. They don't want to be like anyonelse. Comparing your gear, and looks to our soldiers is silly.
We are looking at the Internal Forces of Russia. Kind of like an Army within police. National Guard type of duties.
The gear they are wearing works fine in all types of weather, and locations.
The weapons they use are the most reliable and proved by every conflict in the world for its wide use.
Majority of their instructors, are all veterans of Soviet-Russian wars through out the last 20-30 years. With exeprience only several countries in the world can be compared. US, UK, Israel.
The reason you don't see Armani suits, Rollex watches, BMWs, Oakley sun glasses, and $300 camelbacks is because THEY DON'T NEED IT.
The soldiers you see on the photos work and serve for nothing. They are doing it so that the world can call us a "GREAT COUNTRY". They are doing it because the world knows that there hasn't been a nation on the planet that took Russia as a whole. There will never be a nation on the world that will be able to come close. As long as those guys are standing proud, I can sleep well.
Now just imagine if they would get paid as much as lets say an American soldier. But this is coming, this is not behind a huge mountain, it's actually geting closer and closer.

Kournikova is average at best by the Russian standards. I do not know a single Russian person who would consider her beautiful.
Doable - yes, beautiful - no.
She has a frame and facial features of a typical "kolhoznica"(a farm girl, no offence to farm girls of the world).
She has no class and her personality, from what I heard, ain't a selling point either.
Anyway, I wouldn't bring her home to my mama.
IMHO, the most beautiful females in the former USSR are in Kiev.
I went there couple of years ago, the moment I stepped from the plane - I wanted to get married to every and all of them and start jackhammering kids right a way on a spot... And my friends in America tell me that I am picky!!!

Amazing that you can tell their financial situation by seeing them in the uniforms they were issued with.
Or are you just full of Sh!t?

Wish you'd stop beating around the bush and speak your mind Gaz
Should have seen us when we first got issued kit - two sizes too large or stuff one step from a bin bag. If the WARPAC soldiers saw us then, they'd have pissed themselves laughing. When we came back off basic training we washed and ironed it all, handed it in and got a fresh issue.

Lighten up, dude. What do you think the three ;) are in the end of my post? The smileys you left out of your quote? Hmm? An answer to Permskii's funny remark how Russians are unique and look unique, perchance? But no, since I'm a known Russia-hater (some seem to think), it must be an insult. Whatever.
Those skinny kids look funny in a kind of a lost puppy way, EXACTLY as I must have looked when I was 18 and doing my national service, clothes hanging on my bony shoulders and with a helmet maybe three sizes too big. Brings back some memories, that's all. Hats off for anyone who has ever served, in any country, in any unit.
BTW, I totally and wholeheartedly agree that Russians are like no others. Definitely. Take that as you like.

Yeah well, they don't look poor to me. It was droopy's choice of words and I made a play on his silly argument. That's why the three ;) were there. What's the point of having smileys if they are ignored?

Waaay back when I was on active duty, the Russkies (sorry, old habits die hard :D ) were my enemy. I disliked their political leaders, but always respected the soldiers in uniform & their equipment.
Being "poor" has a negative connotation - in that's it's probably better to be rich than poor. But it is no indication of ability or dedication. A lot of those uniforms aren't cut well, they don't seem to fit well, they have a very basic utilitarian look to them - but they probably work just fine.
Sometimes I forget that they're still coming out of a system where there was no competition. It won't be long before some other uniform company comes along and says "I can give you a much better uniform for the same price". A little competition, some $$ and these problems will resolve themselves.
I do remember reading about some service people that weren't getting paid - or were being paid in food etc. That sucks, and I hope those times are past.
BTW, it must be easy to instill a sense of unity in a force that's so homogenous. In all the formations - all the guys are white, thin, mostly blonde - compare that to a US formation. We've got whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, you name it. And there is some friction - although not nearly as much as I've seen in the civilian world. Just a thought...

Russia has many companies that compete for the military gear / uniforms market. There is no camo-standardization, therefor these companies compete to sell there gear. Which benifits everyone, the old saying is that your weapon was made by the cheapest bidder ;). Well this is the case for your camoflauge / gear, which threw my experience have found it to be top quality (even more so then majority of the "high-speed" stuff).
I'll even list the companies for you guys.
-SSO
-ANA (my personal favorite)
-NPO-SM
-REX-Design (makers of the popular "Flora" uniform)
-Shturm
-Splav
And plus a few older companies who now have gone belly up (or at least i think they have...)
Theres alot of benifits to having no camo-standardization, any soldier can take any gear as long as it matches and theres plenty of different patterns which can be used for different area's/ climates / conditions.
Sometimes I forget that they're still coming out of a system where there was no competition.
There was always competition.. the west just never saw any of it. Just like competition in the west there was favouritism, but generally the military got what they wanted... not what the bean counters decided they could afford.
A lot of those uniforms aren't cut well, they don't seem to fit well, they have a very basic utilitarian look to them - but they probably work just fine.
And many T-34s weren't even painted when they went into battle. The question is that does the army dressed by Gucci always win or is that just wasted time, effort and money?
Lighten up, dude. What do you think the three are in the end of my post?
When you quote the smileys do not work... I didn't remove them. I will lighten up when someone can post some photos of weapons or equipment and not have some cheap shots about how poor the Russians are or how they lost the cold war blah blah blah... in other words I may never lighten up. :-(
I do remember reading about some service people that weren't getting paid - or were being paid in food etc. That sucks, and I hope those times are past.
Some don't perform national service to make money. Some even volunteer their free time to do a job without pay or even their own costs covered.
I'll even list the companies for you guys.

And these are probably just Russian companies. Many forget that the Soviet Union had companies making military products all over the place. When the Soviet Union broke up the armed forces weren't just split up, but optics plants, engine makers, gun designers, aircraft designers, ECM pod designers rocket makers etc etc were all seperated... for a while it was just like the period in WWII when everything had to be moved past the Urals... except that nothing was actually moving. Russia had to learn to provide all the things it needed itself. The NSVT HMG was made in the Ukraine... hense the Russian Kord is replacing it, the MAZ series trucks are Ukrainian, hense Russian trucks are being introduced, the main producers of powerful diesel engines was in the Ukraine, Antonov is in the Ukraine... Illyusion and Tupolev are filling the gap. Etc etc.
