1st ID Soldiers Seize Weapons Cache

BAQUBAH, Iraq - 1st Infantry Division Soldiers detained three suspected anti-Coalition insurgents and seized two weapons caches in Baqubah May 16. Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment detained three suspects following a mortar attack on a Coalition base near here around 12:54 p.m. A combat patrol followed a white pick-up truck to a house where the suspects were among a group unloading a cache of weapons.

The cache included two machine guns, approximately 2,600 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 13 shotgun shells, one shotgun, and three AK-47 magazines. Soldiers from the 105th Engineer Battalion discovered a cache of weapons near the city around 9 a.m. The cache included 55, 90mm mortar rounds; 40, 82mm mortar rounds; 45, 120mm mortar rounds; 20, 107mm rockets and one rocket-propelled grenade. The cache was destroyed at the site.

The suspects were transported to a Coalition detention facility for questioning.

Marines Begin Mosque Repair Project

AR RAMADI, Iraq - Marines recently met with 48 area Imams to discuss a project that will fund repairs and improvements to area mosques.

The project, which began April 29, will entail the completion of $1,200 in repairs and renovations for each of the 48 mosques and employ nearly 500 Iraqis.




Marines Open Detention Facility to Iraqi Leaders

AR RAMADI, Iraq - Marines and Soldiers assigned to the 1st Marine Division opened the gates to a detention facility here May 15 to allow local leaders to inspect conditions and gather first-hand knowledge from interaction with detainees.

Seventeen Iraqi officials, including the governor of Al Anbar Province, toured the detention facility. The group received a briefing describing how the facility operates and how detainees are cared for. The guests were shown a typical cell and screening room. Several cells were opened and the guests were allowed to speak with some of the detainees.
