Chavez cuts all ties with Colombia

Story Highlights
Chavez says Uribe had asked him to help secure the release of hostages
Uribe cited Chavez's direct communication with Uribe's top general as breach
Chavez accuses Uribe of lying
Chavez says his arms are open to the Colombian people(CNN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Wednesday he is cutting all ties with Colombia as long as Alvaro Uribe remains its president.
"I say before the world, while President Uribe is president of Colombia, I will not have any type of relation with him or with the government of Colombia," Chavez said in an address broadcast on national television. "I can't, I can't, I can't."
Chavez noted that Uribe had asked him to help secure the release of hundreds of hostages being held by the leftist rebel group Armed Revolutionary Front of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN).
"I went with my heart in my hand, and I was ready," Chavez told a group of supporters in the southwestern state of Tachira. "I was prepared to go to the most dangerous forest in the country to help."
But last Thursday, Uribe ended Chavez's participation, citing his direct communication with Uribe's top general, a move that Uribe said broke protocol.
"When we were at the point of succeeding, Uribe comes and, without telling me anything, he didn't even call me on the phone or send me an emissary, just sent me a letter saying he was ending my mission," Chavez said. "That was a kick."
Without being specific, Chavez accused Uribe of having lied. "That's real ugly," he said. Chavez also accused Uribe of having bowed to pressure from Washington "to get rid of Chavez."
But the firebrand Venezuelan president, who has called U.S. President George W. Bush "the devil," said his arms are open to the Colombian people.

Chavez may be doing a "Galtieri" on the eve of the Constitutional referendum.

Divert attention away from the opposition to fan the flames of nationalism in order to win.

Sorry Hugo, you're loosing friends and supporters constantly by letting dogma get in the way of good, pragmatic governance.

Chavez is an egotistical asshole! Just isolating his country further. I doubt that anyone in his region of the world can stand the man. All he is doing is making enemies at home and abroad, there are many people in venezuela who are opposed to his constitutional policies in order to give him greater power because they see that, that will further jeopardize the people of venezuela even more. This guys on his way to becoming a despot.

Chavez has been in bed with the FARC for a while. Of course Uribe is going to fire him.

I think Chavez is already a despot. I fully anticipate he will suspend the constitution and dissolve the gvt. in the interest of "Preserving the Nation" as did the Pakistani President. Security always rules over the chaos of democracy. His sudden conflict with Colombia is his pretext. If the Colombians will just co-operate by escalating the disagreement, things will go Chavez' way. I think the referendum on the new powers Chavez wants will eventually pass overwhelmingly. His power/control structure is now by far powerful enough to shape this election. He will have Jimmy Carter there again to certify to the world that everything was done fair and square. Chavez will become the South American Mugabe. The people of Venezuela are in much deeper siht than they realize.

Rightly said. Just had a visit with some family from Venezuela. Their feeling the squeeze, but really don't fathom how ugly it is going to get. Most of the news they get is filtered through Chavez. They do however know that their country is being slowly choked to death by Chavez. Even the Chavistas are falling out of love with him.

Chavez is in Campaign right now, so many of us can expect any thing coming from his mouth. I said in other threat that he have to be very carefull in what he said. Colombia is the Food supply for the poeple of Venezuela. in now days there is low supplies in meat, milk and other food in venezuelan food markets, speacially in Caracas, and Colombia is the only one who can give this kind of food supplies right now.

Chavez is also had fights with: Alejandro Toledo and Alan Garcia from Peru, Vicente Fox (Chavez call him the pet of the empire) and the new president of Mexico, Lagos and Bachellete from Chile, the Congress of Brazil, Aznar, Zapatero and the King of Spain who told hinm to Shut up!!!!, President Bush of USA, Tony Blair of UK, etc,etc,.......... And now Uribe, thats not new.

I think this is the last thing that he want. Chavez has accused the US goverment to prepare in Invation on Venezuela, and Colombia will be the launch soil to do so, in words of Chavez; but in his mind I dont think he will start an Invation against Colombia, becuase this will trigger the US support on Colombia against Venezuela looking forward to put him out of power in venezuela
