France's Foreign Ministry expressed surprise on Wednesday over an Algerian government minister's remarks about a "Jewish lobby" being behind French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The flap came as Sarkozy was preparing to visit Algeria next week.
Muhammad Cherif Abbas, Algeria's minister for veterans, was quoted Monday in the daily El Khabar as saying that Sarkozy had been brought to power by a "Jewish lobby that has a monopoly on French industry."
Abbas also mentioned Sarkozy's "roots," an apparent reference to the French president's maternal grandfather, who was Jewish.
French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pascale Andreani responded Wednesday: "We are surprised about these remarks that appeared in the press, which do not correspond to the climate of confidence and cooperation in which we are preparing the president's state visit."
She remained upbeat about the visit, however, saying it would show that relations "have progressed in many sectors."
The December 3-5 visit will be Sarkozy's second to Algeria, the former jewel in France's colonial crown, since his election in May.
On Wednesday, Abbas told the Algerian state news agency APS that he "never had the intention... of attacking the image of a foreign head of state." He did not deny making the comments.
In the original interview, Abbas also demanded that France repent for its past actions in Algeria.
Relations between the two countries have been strained in recent years, particularly since France's parliament passed a law in 2005 noting the "positive" effects of colonialism. The language was later removed, but a long-awaited friendship treaty between the two countries remains stalled.

It is true though that many jews hold influential positions within French society but is it enough to say there is a lobby strong enough to have Sarkozy elected? And even if there was such lobby I would not care much... It were not jews who created chaos and burned cars and buildings these last few nights...

There seems to be 2 Jewish myths:
1. The Jews own the whole world, its media nad all of its banks
2. The Jews don't control anything, they are just a regular minority always being descriminated against for no real reasons.
The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Our state television aired this dutch state television documentary the other night regarding the Mearsheimer-Walt controversy. Featuring Richard Perle, Col. Lawrence Wilkinson (Colin Powell's chief of staff and responsible for his UN presentation ) etc. No matter which side you take you will probably appreciate it, at least I did.

From this video it seems that AIPAC is only marginally behind Association of Dairy Farmers, and way behind corn growers as far as influence in the United States goes. Magnificent!

ah ok.
but in the middle age the church was against everything that wasn't catholic you know ? the Muslim, Cathares, Ortodoxes and witches, all suffered of it.
In France the Jews, like the Lombards (catholic north Italians), also specialised in being the king's bankers. Focking dangerous job if you ask me: the king was always broken like hell and when he couldn't pay back his debt he used to massacre his creditors.
The Lombards, the Jews and the Templars had all to suffer of it but it seems the business was so profitable that the king always found enough courageous bankers to lend him money.
we are far from the subject, but hadn't you been caugh in a knee jerk reaction here ?
