Tom Hanks backs US troops in Iraq

2.11PM, Tue May 18 2004

Tom Hanks, star of Second World War TV drama Band of Brothers and the movie Saving Private Ryan, has voiced his support for US troops.

He was speaking in Cannes, where film-maker Michael Moore and actor Sean Penn yesterday used the film festival to attack the Bush administration and the war in Iraq.

Hanks said: "These are extremely tough times, not just for America but for the world.

"We are up against a type of philosophy we don't quite understand. We are in a difficult sort of grey area now that defies logic and defies common sense. We understood the evil of World War Two."

"To our troops now, all you can say is God bless every one of them. Let's hope they find safety and a peaceful world.

"I'm sure they will find the American populace much more understanding of what they've been through."

Its the medias fult ppl listen to movie stars . Soldiers get less attention then a movie star who played a soldier in a movie .

Soldier - hey media , I was just over in Iraq , wanna hear my views ?
Media - No

Actor - I played a ex cop who lost his daughter in a hit movie .
Media - what do you think of the Iraq war ?

I don't graduate school, or even college, makes you more apt to speak on politics. It depends solely on your understanding, involvement, and interest in current events. I'm in a post-graduate design program, and I've met more idiotic boneheads here than anywhere else. But, I agree, I think there is a (nauseatingly) liberal bias in the entertainment industry. There's nothing I hate more than some celebrity mouthing off about the environment, then hopping into a Hummer and speeding off, or someone going on about the poor and homeless, while living in a $7M home. Most of it seems trendy to me, especially Bush-bashing. I seen it all the time at my school, kids wearing "Not my President" shirts, and when you ask them why they don't like him, they give a slew of opinions, never voicing any real facts or figures. Being anti-Bush and -Republican is cool for a lot of people, but they're only doing what celebrities and musicians tell them. They're sheep, and I don't give an credence to what they have to say. It's a very hypocritical world we live in.

I wonder what the response by the audience was. Hopefully they respected his opinion, but I doubt they aplauded for 20 minutes like they did after Michael "Dinty" Moore's movie.

Its not that I hate when celebs talk politics, its when they act like their oppinion are worth more than mine that makes me hate them. Why should someone who gets paid millions of dollars to not actually do anything act like they know whats right for society.

Ive always respected Tom Hanks, back to the days when he was campaigning for the national WWII memorial, which i hope to go see sometime.

Definately a good man who cares about our soldiers, and he has balls indeed, because in hollywood anyone even slightly in support of the president is basically shunned from the industry.

**** MICHAEL MOORE!

:cantbeli: Conditioning...

To me a good actor is someone who I believe him (her) in a role.

I don't give a s**** of what they say about the current world events.

Their opinion is worthless and not better than the average Joe but they are media people and under the magnifier of the press.

It seems most of you on this board hate Sean Penn and Madonna -for example- simply because they opposed to the war.

Sean Penn is one of my favorit actor because of his acting in "U-Turn" or "Mystic River" for example. And I really like the pop songs of "American Life" or "Ray of Light". Simple as that . I don't care what he (she) said about OIF

Also there is the usual accompanying rethoric that came out last year " he (she) did not graduate so he (she) is stupid "

Intelligence and common sense have nothing to do with education.

I think Tom Hanks is a good actor in the classic sense..

but why we should listen to him or Sean Penn is beyond me... part of the american obsession with performers mixing with politics.

I agree that Hollywood, et al should have no more of a voice than the rest of the world.

I remember watching an interview with Elvis. A reporter was badgering him on the Vietnam issue and he kept repeating, "I'm just an entertainer". He was asked, "shouldn't you use your celebrity status to speak out about the war?" His reponse was a terse, "NO." Long live the King.

As for Mr. Hanks vs other Hollywood types, he has shown over the years to go beyond just saying, "I played a character therefore I magically understand what soldiers go through". He has continuously supported veterans causes, especially WWII vets over the years. Another difference is the manner in which he and other "right" leaning actors/actresses speak out - calm, and to the point.

Meanwhile you have Babs Streisand saying that all Republicans are evil and should be shot because they're money grubbing bastard who don't care about the poor. (This, at her $5,000 a plate fund raiser.)

It's not that people should listen to him and trust everything he says. It's that it takes guts to come out against the EXTREMEMLY liberal hollywood crowd. Especially with all the people like Michael Moore Sean Penn, Martin Sheen etc.

Let's see: Michael Moore doesn't care about, Bush, the soldiers or anything republican in nature.

Tom Hanks: Doesn't care for Bush, supports the troops, more centrist in his thinking.

Things I have read about both men.

Says a lot and from what I can tell, Tom Hanks is a bit mor eopen minded than MM is.

Two sides to every story.

Your president,, is not getting support from anyone, Hanks and Moore are on the same team, except Moore decided to attack the bush administration and Hanks decided to support the TROOPS... not what your government is doing to this world.
