Thugs attempt to set the policeman on fire

The Serbian press has spent most of the week soul-searching in the aftermath of a truly terrifying attack that took place on Sunday.

A plain clothed police officer from the elite Gendarmerie Unit - Nebojsa Trajkovic (42) - was identified in the stands by hooligans from Red Star Belgrade’s notorious “Delije” (heroes) firm who attacked him with broken chairs and attempted to set him on fire with flares.

The entire incident was broadcast live on TV. The terrified and badly injured policeman was forced to fire warning shots into the air to save himself from the mob.

Eventually colleagues managed to get to him and save his life. The fighting continued both inside and outside the stadium.

Several hooligans have been arrested and charged so far. They face charges ranging from public violence to attempted murder.

Officer Trajkovic suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns (non scarring ) to his face and body, as well as lacerations, bruising and mental trauma. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Football hooliganism is a massive problem in Serbia, where an under-funded and partially reformed police force are up against hordes of unemployed and angry young men - the lost, disinherited “war generation” that is bearing the brunt of Serbia’s economic and social hardships.

I doubt it, no mafia would do something so publicly.

I read another report, they attempted to shove the torch in his mouth. That's attempted murder. Hope they get the book thrown at them and assraped in prison.

This is just a generalization....Second of all who in their right mind sends undercover armed police officer into crowd of 4000-5000 people to arrest people lighting flares....plus Russia, Poland, France, Holland, Italy didnt go to war but still have major problems with hooligans

Clearly these hooligans are twats and are lucky to not have been shot, but using this incident to not-so-subtly take a swipe at Serbia is just stupid.

Now that is a professional.

Search up 'Serbian Police Brutality at a Basketball Game'. There is more or less open warfare going on between the Delije and the Gendarmerie.

It is true that hooliganism is a major (and growing) problem in European football in general, but I was commenting on the problem here in Serbia, where in my opinion hooliganism is worsened by socio-economic problems that are a direct result of war and NATO's bombing.

Not sure if this is directed at me, but if it is then there is a misunderstanding.

This post is no way a swipe at Serbia. The incident has shocked and outraged the country. Those hooligans are source of national shame.

I should note for the record that I live and work in Belgrade - a city I adore - and I am actively involved in efforts to rehabilitate the reputation of the country and transform its economy. My pro-Serbian credentials are beyond question. If anyone requires proof, message me.

No offence to any football lovers, but it became a game for plebs. The international football seems completely ruined. Overpayed primadonna wimpy players, hooligans attracted to the game, flaring of petty nationalism. In a weird way, many much more macho/contact sports like Rugby and boxing do not attract so many a-holes.

Look at boxing, while two men beat each other to resemble meat sacks, everybody is sitting down orderly, any car/motorcycle racing, dangerous sports, yet the fans are passionate and polite. In football, while a bunch of nancys run around the field, the fans riot. Is it because football is really such a wrenchingly boring sport, and "fans" try to find other ways to entertain themselves?

The allegiance of the firms to their team is often a secondary consideration, the firms reputation matters more than anything including whatever sport they are supposed to be watching, the relative merits of the sport doesn't matter football is just the biggest most convenient conduit for their aggresion all the Serbs can really do is control it in and around the stadiums, you can never stop it .

It all started with the 'shooting' (with a rubber round) of a very young member of the Delija (between fourteen and sixteen years old) by the police, amidst their usual ruckus. Serious injury resulted, and the Delije have been using rougher tactics against the police ever since - with the police reciprocating.

There is only one way to deal with soccer hooligans zero tolerance option. Witout pulling back because those s..bags decide to keep low profile till things calm down.

Telling them that they cause more damage to their own club and to soccer fans comunity than to the security and police won't work. One of first league clubs that had particulary vicious "fans" had a serious problem some time ago. They had trubles finding a security company suicidal enough provide security during matches.

I think that every new head of ministry of justice and ministry of internal affairs in countries that have such problems shoud be sent to a soccer match to see reality. Im not sadist soo i wouldn't force them to act according to their country law. Hell i would even be mercifull enough to provide them with "turtle shell" maybe even a riot shield if i am in good mood.
After incidents with soccer fans in Poland including hooligans rampaging throu capital city they were talking alot. Still no one bothered to fix faulty law. If we were following that law there is a quite big chance i wouldn't be writing that post now.
