How long before you join the Corps? Depending on what your MOS is and if you are sent to Iraq and recieve combat pay you may be getting more than $18000.

I am a student with a part-time job, so therefore, I am poor. I was raised to never talk about money (it's tacky!). However, my father is kindly footing all my bills. When I graduate will be a different story.

I don't think MOS has anything to do with your pay.

Pay grade, years in service, martial status, living expenses in that area, children, hazardous pay, seperation pay, jump pay. This is all I can remember.

I was making diddly, but in the last year, I bit the bullet and started working 3 jobs, albeit 2 of the jobs are consulting. Suddenly the money comes a bit more easily. Less free time though. :( Since I didn't come up with a number, I'll post the following in its stead.

Given the exhange rate between South African Rands and US$, 18 000 aq year is a damn good salary for the average South African!!! Our "average" salary is about $2700 a year. I earn closer to the 18 000 bracket before tax, land up closer to the 2700 range after tax

Say what!?

That means your government(s) gets, what, 85% of your income?!

Not to nit pick here, but looking over South Africa's tax structure I find that hard to believe.

fewer than one million had incomes of ZAR 80,000 (US $13,333) or higher. The most affluent 20 percent of the population receive 74.3 percent of household income and pay 94.3 percent of personal income tax.

More recent data shows a person earning R235 794 is paying 26.04% in 2004...

Either your local taxes are higher than your national government's, which I would suspect is not the case, or you actually do not really know what you in pay in taxes...or have no income.

If you earned R30000, then you are not paying taxes at all...

More data (in brief can be found here compating taxation levels in 1995 to those of 2004). http://www.pwc.com/Extweb/pwcpublications.nsf/docid/383AB40F3368676A80256E390031E17F

Not exactly. Teachers in pretty much every state would probably be more better off trying to use a sack of **** as currency, though NY and CA do have a higher-than-average pay for teachers, but definitely not $50,000 starting out. My Italian teacher last year (which was his first year teaching) said he was making about $35-40K a year.

That would be an HS teacher, on Long Island more specifically.
