Memorial For Spanish Soldiers Completed

TRABZON - Construction of the memorial for Spanish soldiers who lost their lives in a plane crash in Trabzon was completed.
Mayor Omer Yildiz of Macka town of northern province of Trabzon told the A.A correspondent on Tuesday that memorial erected by Spanish sculptor Luis Martin De Vidales was completed.
``We are trying to do our utmost to inaugurate the memorial on May 26, the first anniversary of the plane crash. This tragic event has brought Turkish and Spanish people closer to each other.`` he added.
The memorial is 3 meters in height and 6 meters in width. There is a steel prism symbolizing soul of soldiers ascending to the heaven.
The inscription on the memorial lists names of 62 Spanish soldiers.
The memorial cost about 33 thousand euros.
An Ukrainian plane crashed in the Pilav mountain near Kockine hamlet in Sahinkaya region in Macka on May 26, 2003, killing the thirteen crew members including a Belorussian and 12 Ukrainian citizens, and sixty-two Spanish peacekeeping soldiers returning from Afghanistan.
