The weapon upgrade program for that the NZ army going through soon, Is looking at the supressing the majority of all our small arms, primarily combat units, along with new optics etc.

we got suppressors for our m9's so that we could take people out without being compromised, but we never got subsonic rounds...funny how that works... wouldn't say we were a conventional unit tho, so no they aren't standard issue.

Suppressors are legal in NZ, and you can get a good over barrel one made for around $300-$400NZ fitted. I have one on my SLR (FNFAL) and once I get a Valmet/Galil foresight/gas block on my AK I'll get one thrown on that.
It is however illegal to fit a non issue one to an issue rifle in the NZ and most likely other Armies.

Units that can afford them will get them, just because you never know if you are going to need it.
This will generally include anything more sneaky than dismounted scouts. On the other hand, the M110 comes with a sound suppression device as part of the package, so conventional units will have access to suppressed weapons if you count snipers.
LRS . . . what can I say? They take a lot of abuse from the big army, and don't get used properly, hopefully becoming part of MI brigades will help with their doctrinal usage.

LRS has to the best of my knowledge gone away and become RSTA(recon, surveillance, and target acquisition) as part of the BCT(brigade combat teams) that the army is changing to. at least i don't know of any LRS unit's left over. as far as the NG LRS company's.. we, E co. 51st, got relieved by a NG LRS company, H Co 51st I think.., and that was over a year ago and I've been wasting away in TRADOC since then, so I guess they could still be around and not disbanded yet I don't know, but they're probably on their way.

The suppressor comes with a longer barrel with threads on it.

Indeed that is a good question, how would a suppressor attach to a standard M9? And yes, they did come with new barrels, with threaded ends to them. Funny thing also, our barrels weren't black like the rest of the 9, they were stainless polished steel, so we were extra bling, the suppressors were flat black tho...what does sakotw mean?

oooh, i get it. they think i'm faking the funk or something of that sort. can't say i've ever been called a 'knob' before..well this is the internet, and short of faxing you a copy of my ERB, I don't really have any ways to prove anything to you. or do i have a reason to.

BTW if anyone is interested why I asked. I was thinking more about suppressors used for hearing protection, noise pollution solution rather than silent killer super black delta ops some particular-yet-still-undetermined-SAKOTW tried to imply :) .

From some I have talked with, that is just the point. To be able to hear when your 30. I think it makes really good sense.

as does a good pair of Peltors. Too bad most units don't issue them. They are very pricey.

Sound is only part of the reason for our Army looking at suppressors. One of the main Lessons learnt was the use of them for night work. Since alot our work is done by night, weapon signature is a pretty big concern, normally if you see a muzzel flash you put some rounds into it, well if your enemy can't see the flash its pretty hard for him to locate you.
Even by day with normal ammo (not subsonics) on a suppressed weapon its f*ckn hard to get a general direction of the firer.
As for the sound anyone who has done firing in an enclosed area (MOUT/CQB) will know what its like when you lose your hearing protection or how hard command and control of your troops gets when there are live rds going down range and they lose their situational awarness.

niiice. mom is always right concerning her son! although she does not determine your cool factor she establishes that you are indeed a good human! plus the fact that you were able to see a suppressor in person means you are all that and two snaps!
I love how everyone thinks that suppressors are cool and every joe wants one, but I am here to tell you that they are not all they're cracked up to be.....its like attaching a brick to the front of your gun, and even worse when you have a 14" barrel, cause it turns into an 18" gun (hell I may as well carry a musket) ....then add up all the other crap you have to throw on there and its about as heavy as a freakin shorty SAW with nothing on it. Then when you fire as few as 30 rounds the damn thing it absorbs all that heat, and gets so hot that it will burn skin, puts burn marks on clothes and sandbags, and melt gloves if you have to touch it. I only use one at night when I don't want to leave a huge signature.
so what your saying is, suppressors are cool. niiiice. ;)
you could zip tie 5 hot dogs to a suppressor and after you are done killing the enemy, dinner is cooked and ready to be served. nice? niiice.
