Down at my unit the other night we had an open forum on ambushing, what works, what doesn't, what equipment to use and how, methods etc etc, and it struck me that one thing i haven't heard of happening in Iraq at the moment is Ambushing.

Is it happening and we're not made aware of it? I know that US bases are still getting mortared, and so it would seem like something that might be good to do, even in an Urban Environment.

What do you all think?

Coalition forces seem to be getting ambushed alot, is it about time it started going the other way?

Unfortunately the, insurgents, terrorist, assholes whatever you want to call them, in these cities don't move around in such a way that make them likely candidates for ambushes. They move through alleys, from one street to the other, this way and that. The best you can hope for is to set up and some of them fall in your lap, but, this is risky considering the intel net that they probably have. The ambushers may become the ambushed. Like someone has already said, I would think that small units, SF or sniper teams, are probably pulling ambushes and most certainly when you get out of the urban environment out toward the border there are ambushes set up on every main road, every night.

That sucks! Can you say "airstrike"!! It was so much easier in the mountains.

"Roger that Reaper 1, there's a Wadi to our West about 100 meters, do you see it, over"

"Roger that Panicking SF team, we see it"

"Reaper 1 please eliminate all enemy West of the Wadi, over"

"Hold your ears down there"

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

FOOM FOOM FOOM FOOM FOOM FOOM FOOM

Note: SF team later buys pints for all there Harrier buddies.

as far as U.S. troops in the cities...mostly we're doing what are called "presense patrols". drive around in plain sight...anyone dumb enough to open up on us gets mauled by a crap-ton of firepower. ambushes only work if you can keep the enemy on the defensive. with the amount of fire our troops can bring to bear, the insurgents dont have a chance at that.

I hate to admit that they're all real that's what's scary. Things aren't usually as cool as they look in the movies, I found that out early on!!

GOD. u cant avoid that. because u cant secure every building around the base within the range of a tiny mortar in urban areas and neither can u kill all un-identified person 3000m away. except u just locate ur base in the middle of the desert. and there are some tech to secure that base. just a word...
