Col. Pat Stogran officially takes command today of the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Group, an elite force of army, navy and air force members based in Kingston.

Stogran takes over from Col. John Turner. The change-of-command parade takes place at 10 a.m. at CFB Kingston in front of the Fisher Building on Givenchy Street.

Stogran, a native of La Sarre, Que., was working in the Joint Staff department in Ottawa as director of general intelligence before taking command of the Joint Operations Group.

The group can be rapidly deployed to both Canadian and international missions to provide operational-level command and control.

Members of the elite force are also charged with theatre activation around the world and manning the Disaster Assistance Response Team.

Rear Adm. Jean-Pierre Thiffault will preside over the change-of-command parade.

Lt.-Gen. Steve Lucas, special adviser to the chief of the defence staff for defence policy review and homeland security issues, will also be on hand.

This is the same commander from the PPCLI in Afghanistan back in 2002.

Wasn't Col. Stogran the commander of our battlegroup in Afghanistan in 2002?

Wow. I never even knew we had a "Joint Operations Group".

We have both a Joint Operations Group and a Joint Support Group based in Kingston, and often have multinational members attached. Both are critical to deployment of CF operations overseas, but I don't know if I would use the word 'Elite' in the traditional sense of combat operations. They are; however, very good at their jobs.

hahah... I'm so used to ignoring everything under "------" as it's usually user signatures

But yeah it's good to hear that a proven field commander is in charge

Col. Pat Stogran officially takes command today of the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Group, an elite force of army, navy and air force members based in Kingston. Not so sure about this opening statement. It makes CFJOG sound like another JTF2. Really, it is a scalable headquarters to launch international operations & it evolved from 1 Cdn Div HQ & Sigs Regt. It also includes 1 Engineer Support Unit (evovled from the Air Force's 1 CEU).

This description was better (less the "elite" part):

The group can be rapidly deployed to both Canadian and international missions to provide operational-level command and control.

Members of the elite force are also charged with theatre activation around the world and manning the Disaster Assistance Response Team.
