Something just went on my shopping list.
When Winchester shut down it's New Haven plant a year and a half ago it spelled the end of two iconic firearms, the Model 94 and the "Rifleman's Rifle," the Model 70.
Since that day, there has been massive speculation about when (not really if) those two firearms would come back into production.
As of today, the Winchester Model 70 is back and the biggest news is that it is being made in the United States-not overseas as many had prognosticated-in a factory down in Columbia, South Carolina that makes machine guns and sniper rifles for the military.

X2. Even though I haven't hunted deer or elk in a long time, I'm very nostalgic for the Model 70, which in .30-06 w/ 3x9 Leopold optics, was my first deer rifle.
I'd love to have one in .30-06 and another in .25-06.
Thanks for the news, James!

*Thrusts fist in air*
Was getting tired of the imported ones. Not the smoothest.

I'm happy that they are making the Model 70 again. Gonna have to start saving up to get a Model 70 in 30-06. However, I won't be truly happy until they start making new Model 94s .
these 70's are push feed? i wish winchester would come out with the pre 64 control feed action.

From the article:
The new Model 70s incorporate the pre-'64 style controlled-round feed.

I've owned two post-1964 M70s (still have my .22-250), and salivate at the thought of having something like the old school Model.

I have a 270 win model 70 sporter.I love that rifle shot alot of deer and some moose with it,I would love to get a 30-06 cal. Also noticed they have a 300 win mag i want to get one of them also.
From the article:
thanks James. i honestly had to go through the article four times to find it.
looks like an almost entirely new rifle. new action and new trigger. winchester/fn have learned some new tricks from their military/leo sniper rifles and incorporated some of those features into this new rifle and dubbed it the model 70 for marketing purposes.
does look like an interesting rifle. remington quality control on the 700 has gone down the pipe lately and savage have been picking up some of the slack. i really don't need another bolt gun but if i were this would have to come under consideration.

I must admit that, if I am able, I will buy an '06 Model 70 made in the late 1940s. I will hunt with it until I'm too old and pass it on as a family heirloom.
