At the Allenby border crossing linking Jordan and Israel, a Jordanian policemen entered a VIP room and started firing his rifle at the Israelis inside. Israel Harel, a well-known media spokesman for the Israeli settlement movement was there at the time: "There were four of us. He tried to assassinate all of us. He shot one bullet and his gun jammed."
"He pointed straight at us. The bullet hit 20 centimeters (8 inches above the head of one of us. We are still upset by the incident. It could have ended very badly," said Harel.
"Each time he pulled the trigger, the rifle didn't fire and eventually there were about 30 bullets on the floor around him. A petty officer jumped on him and then some more people arrived on the scene and apprehended the man," Harel said.
Following the incident, Israeli security officials contacted their Jordanian counterparts and arranged the prompt crossing of the four Israelis.
Israeli and Jordanian officials are investigating the incident.
Sources in Jerusalem said they expected Jordanian security officials to secure the border crossing for Israelis.
