Searched here, no joy. Google was limited in reviews. Just asking for input from people who have actual experience with this piece of kit. I'm guessing Royal or DeltaWhiskey58 have good input on this item or know and trust someone who has.

Have one for the past 11 years and its the Mutts Nuts.. bit bulky compared to the snug pack.. but I think the Buffalo keeps you warmer.I have a hood with mine.
Used it overseas and here while on Ex's..keeps you warm even when wet.

So they're worth the money in your opinion?

A great piece of kit - been around for years.
Especially good if you're not putting in a huge amount of effort - you should stash it if running around etc.... Great for the range, throwing on when resting, hunting and general wear if it's chilly out there.
The fit is accurate - so buy the correct size, no real need to 'up size'.
Pertex skin isn't waterproof, but it'll give you a little protection until you can layer up.
Anything that's been through the ringer as many times as these have must be worth the cash.
I wouldn't be without mine in the cold NYC winter!
its the Mutts Nuts..
Is that good or bad?

The 'Mutt's Nut's' = The 'Dog's Bollxcks'
The best!

Thanks much for the input. Would it be comfortable worn as the main layer (like a sweater) underneath a waterproof shell?

You could do it - depends how much work you're doing and how cold it is, you'll certainly stay warm.

it really is that good,
I've had one for years although I have just changed it for a MONTANE EXTREME jacket. Which is very similar in design but has reinforcing on the elbows etc, which is proving ideal for range work etc
The montane jacket is slightly bulkier in design but I find it a lot warmer overall (its also slightly cheaper if you shop around)
The trick with these jackets though, is to wear it next to the skin as the pile is designed to trap air against it, thus keeping you warmer.

Definitely worth the money.
I wear a dry flo(lowe alpine) (http://www.lowealpine.com/Products/Detail.asp?ProductTypeID=7&ProductGroupID=1116&Position=7&SpecificActivityID=) underneath as a base layer and use the buffalo as a mid and then my smock.
I'd always wear a base layer because you'll find if your too warm at least you'll have some thing under neath if you have to take the buffalo off.
I've worn it loads as a main layer..As stryker Lead has said, Pertex is not waterproof but in light rain the inner will stay dry until you can get a waterproof outer on.

I have had one for 16 years and they are absolutely brilliant bits of kit. I have had others but nothing close. I would thoroughly recommend them.

I've had one for years although I have just changed it for a MONTANE EXTREME jacket.
I have a Special 6 and a Montane Extreme. I find that the Montane is a much better smock. I prefer the cut of the less expensive Montane and it comes with an excellent wired hood that you don't have to pay extra for.
I find that the zip of the Bufffalo digs into my throat, whereas the Montane is a snug comfortable fit, with a good "beard guard" at the top of the zip.

Had my first Mountain Shirt (the original version) for 14 years before it wore out. My new one is 8 years old and going strong.
For best effect don't wear anything under it - that's how its designed to work. Gets a bit sweaty and smelly, but works great. It also works fine when wet - great for UK climbing.
Probably the single best bit of outdoor gear that I own. I also have one of the lighter 'civvy' versions that I wear most of the time on the hills. That's only 6 years old though, so no idea about its long term wear p-)

These are the important bits.

They work fine over a decent wicking base layer (I use Merino) and it works out less smelly in the long run.
