Here are somes scans from the photos I took last Sunday at the "Rotor Air Fete" that was held by the French Army Light Aviation at a local base in South West of France. A small airfield, beautiful weather and some interesting aircrafts...

G.C.P. from Pau. Shoes came from various commercial sources -as usual-with French SF troops- they roped down from the Puma so they each had rappelling harness. They carried FAMAS, MP-5SD, shotgun (Mossberg?) and Minimi.

Tough looking guys indeed ;)

Hey I'm not talking about the pilots or paintings, not even about the technical capabilities of that machine. But it just looks ugly, no doubt. I doubt anyone could find that chopper beautiful

A b52 looks ugly, as does an A-10, an AH-64, but like a Hip they weren't made to look pretty for schoolboys to drool over. They do a job and they do it well. With regard to the hip 17,000 users can't be wrong.

I love it too... especially the new all weather versions with the ramp rear door.
For someone who doesn't know any better the sleek new euro designs look faster, but the Hip is the real deal... there were more HIPs made than Hueys.

I don't care for what they are made. A Merlin or NH90 isn't made for looking good either, but they do. That MI does not.

Now you can have a different taste, but the number of users can't be an argument for the appearance.

Why does picturing a crap gun make the A-10 not ugly?

There is even an A-10 unit with a arm patch that says "Ugly, but well hung".

If fire power were a measure of beauty then 6 x 32 shot rocket pods, 6 ATGMs and a 50 cal HMG would make the HIP rather better looking than the NH-90. Looks like the abomination offspring of a Puma and a Commanche with that edge down its side.

Now you can have a different taste, but the number of users can't be an argument for the appearance.

No, it is an argument for performance and capability.. which is actually what military equipment is designed for. It may come as a shock but the HIP wasn't designed so you could think it looks pretty.

I don't care for what they are made.

Hmmm, so you can be this discussion boards expert on pretty? "I don't care whether it can do the job it was designed for, or whether it is combat proven or reliable of capable... it is just how pretty it looks that is important.

I'd rather have an ugly Apache than a new pretty but largely unproven Tiger any day.

But then I have never served... perhaps someone who has actually put their butt on the line can tell us how the most important feature of their equipment and weapons was how pretty it looked?

Between the others shoes there is some Oakley's boots and some Hi-Tec / Magnum boots too ( old models with the "flat" sole design on the side of the boots )
The rifle on the extreme right is a FAMAS with a special rail mounted on it with an aimpoint or an ACOG ( not sure wich one with the res of the pics )
The shotgun seems to be a remington 870 with the typical folding stock and the typical shape of the synthetic black grip there is also a Surefire handguard with the light un mounted.
The pants and the vests are both made by SASS in UKhttp://www.sasskit.co.uk/ and were part of a contract for the GCP ( Airborne Commando Group ) of the COS ( Special Operations Command )
They are made out of the same RIP-STOP NYCO as the military UK clothing but in a french C/E camo pattern.
If the show happened to be in PAU the helis are surely from the DAOS ( Special Operations Air Force Departement )

The Mi-8 is actually not ugly. It is beautiful. So is the NH 90, but the Tiger is indeed very ugly, especially when compared to the Mi28.

The moral of this story is: Some people have good taste, some do not. Some people have some disabilities which makes them hate Russian hardware and love their own peoples hardware looks, even when they are really ugly. This disability is very important, because there have to be people to take care of all the hideously ugly children.
