Can someone please explain American Election?

G'day guys,

I know this has been explained to me a few times, but I still don't get it - is there a good web link that explains the way Presidents are elected?

I don't get all the primaries, key states, electoral college, etc...

Is the votong system preferntial voting? first past the post? proportional representation?

Sorry for sounding ignorant - I'm sure Americans get it, but I don't think all Aussies do...
