Best bodybuilder in the world: check.
Top money actor: check.
Marry a Kennedy: check.
Governor of California: check.
Basically every major goal he went after he got. If he could be Pres. he'd have a good shot at it.
What has Putin done? Basically muscled his way into a situation in which just about anything would be an improvement and improved it. And that's about it.

Protip: TIME didn't select him because he's a super-awesome dude.
TIME's Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse.

Knock it off - and let that be that. Unless the two of you are friends, tred very lightly.

I respect Putin for what he's done for Russia in bringing it out of the Mr. Yeltsin's Dark Ages, but...
Thanks, but no thanks as far as President of the U.S. is concerned.
It's not that I have anything against Putin or his country, it's just that I'd much prefer the president of MY country to be born in MY country; a feeling which while I cannot prove, I suspect Mr. Putin would agree with.

You are all giving Putin too much credit.
Only reason Russia got rich is because of the Oil Prices and that is it. Putin is just lucky.

21. If you are a rabid believer in any 'the space aliens/Halliburton/the Jews/the government did it' theory about 9/11- don't post it here. We've heard it all before and we're sick to the back teeth of them. Punch yourself in the face instead.
And have the best day evah!

Putin understands how to exercise power. Unlike Iraq, the restive Muslim province of Chechnya now nestles comfortably in Putin's palm, albeit with about half the people it had a decade ago.According to 1989 census for Chechnya-Ingushetia, the population was 1.2 million.
Now Chechnya alone, without Ingushetia, according to the 2002 census has more than 1.1 million.
The people who suffered the most from the war were ethnic Russians, since prior to the two wars, Chechnya was a multiethnical republic with only Russians stacking up to more than 20% of the population. Chechnya now is a monoethnical republic, with Chechens making up more than 95% of the population, since the majority of non-Chechen population, especially Russians, lived in the urbanized areas, the ones to have been targeted by strikes of the Russian federal troops.
