I watched nearly every home game of the Kalamazoo K-Wings in their '86-'87 season. I don't believe there was ever a game without a few brawls and I recall at least one full team event.

One player, Kevin Evans, set the record that year for the most penalty minutes in a season by a pro hockey player at 648 minutes. The total for the team was 2848 minutes.

At least you get penalized. In boxing, another fine sport, you get points for punching your opponent in the face. And, if you don't like the heavy contact stuff, there are plenty of hockey leagues where it is not tolerated.

I'm with Meatwad, overall I'd say hockey is the best sport on Earth. I just wish I had been a decent skater in my youth.

Fighting in hockey serves a number of uses.
Looking at the video originally posted it looks and sounds to me that the whistle blew and the player whacked the goal-tender's glove hand then the puck went in the net.
This would earn you a beating in any league I ever played in.
The bench-clearing brawl that ensued was a result of the Refs losing control of the game and the coaches losing control of their players.
Bench-clearing brawls are very rare these days yet whenever one happens it makes the news and is held up as an example of how hockey is a "Goon sport" and on the level of professional Wrestling.
ps. The goalie is like your little sister: Nobody ****s with them and gets away with it. Hockey Code.

Times two. I play defense in hockey and will gladly pull a penalty for my goalie. If he is hit late I will hit the guy who did and tell him not to do it again. Goalies are usually in precarious positions and require a little extra protection. It is also understood by the forwards that if they touch the goalie they will get jacked. I just wish I had an ice rink in my town.

Now THAT is a game with fights. Reminds me of watching my cousin play in goalie in juniors. Last game of the season and no playoffs for the team that season. Everyone ended up dropping the gloves literally fighting for a spot on the team or any other team. At the end the benches were mostly empty with 3 players left. More players watching from the bleachers than on the ice/bench at the end. Good times.

When they showed Senators, I thought it was going to involve Emery...

I watched that video, and I don't think you're accurately describing the fight. It really didn't appear that they were getting 'beaten the crap out of'. In fact, somewhat the opposite...

EDIT:

I just rewatched the video... You really need to take a fresh look... One Canadian is beating a Soviet player in the middle, and three others are getting beaten by Soviet players near the goal. And then the mass brawl started, and I could no longer quantify who was getting the better of it.

ummmmmmmmmmm... ok. As opposed to the sport of boxing, which is all about fighting. Or football and rugby for that matter, both extremely physical sports. Hell even soccer gets rough sometimes, and thats before the fans get involved. Hunting is extremely brutal if you consider it a sport, but I wont go there. Even baseball and basketball have their fair shares of fights. Its kind of an inherent part of sports in general. Show me a mainstream sport not grounded by physical contact in some way and i'll mail you league sign up papers for the local chess tournaments immediately.

There's fighting in pretty much every sport out there. That fight was intense, but I'm sure there was something more to it before.

The Ottawa Philly game was a good brawl. Teams thought they can push us around before, but not anymore. Ottawa Buffalo was a good one too.

I never played hockey, and I am not a fan, so to those on the outside the fighting seems to be purely for entertainment. I do not enjoy hockey at all, unless I am at a game and drunk.

Did I say I like boxing? Did I say I like fights that occur in other sports? Did I say fights don't occur in other sports?

A hockey fight is not football. Football is physical, of course. But when a fight breaks out that means the athletes lost their composure. It's childish. I watch certain sports because I like the game, the competition, the strategy. Not because I want to see people box each other.

I'm talking about most of the medals your countrymen have in Hockey.
Ovechkin is a good player. But you see to get anywhere, he has to move to the NHL.
If the Russian Elite league is so special, why do your guys keep coming over this way.
Ovechkin and Malkin, case in point.

You contradict yourself then.
Earlier you were bragging about more money in the Russian league.

Now Roman, you don't have to come running whenever I talk about Russian players. I already admitted that some of the best players ARE Russian. The point I have been getting at is that they are less physical. And in the NHL the less physical players tend to lose their cool when they get hit around and end up pulling off cheap shots.
Theres cheap shots from everyone. Look at Chris Simon. And Ruutu. Those guys are assholes.

It's not aggressiveness. It's confidence and a willingness to sacrifice there body for the puck. Look at Mike Fisher for example. That guys not an aggressive player, he's very finesse, but he will throw his body as hard as he can at the other player and never lets up.

I'll agree there. He plays with 110% intensity. He's a good guy to have on the penalty kill. In contrast, I remember russian Alexi Yashin played with heart rate of 80 beats a minute, and not even sweating a drop. Eventually, the new york islanders didn't even want him.

See, he wears a visor that shades his eyes so goalies can't tell what he's looking at when he shoots. If only he got veteran players to back him up, I'm sure the Caps can be up there with the senators. Kolzig is a good goalie as well, so they are still a playoff contender.
