As a long time admirer of the Royal Navy, I have often wondered what is the current state of the Royal Navy. In particular the size, as far as capital ships go, and future expansion of the fleet. Seeing as how England is an island nation it would seem the bulk of defense spending would go to the navy. Also, anyone know how the Royal Navy compares to say the French navy?

Go have a look at http://www.hazegray.org/ . They have listings for both the RN and the French Navy (and many more besides).

Seeing as how England is an island nation

England is not an island nation - it has land borders with two other nations.

Wales and Scotland?

I think England is the southern portion of the Island of Great Britan.

The United Kingdom is the official political name of Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland joined together.

(However, there is no such thing as a United Kingdom futbol squad in the World Cup. One would think the UK should have more chances to win the Cup but never do.)

Arent Wales and Scotland governed by the British government? Hence, they are more in line with territories then soverign lands.

Scotland and England are unifed due to the Act of Union that was signed in 1707.

See Acts of Union 1707 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acts_of_Union_1707)

Wales was formally annexed in the 16th Century during the reign of Henry the VIII.

See Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_in_Wales_Acts_1535%E2%80%931542)

Needless to say it's all a complicated affair caused by wars, the way titles are inherited, a Kings own personal property separate to the crown and so forth.

Not per se. Over the past few years Wales and Scotland have adopted their own assemblies regarding their own nations. England however, does not have any political institution directly representing it, only parliament, which is responsible for the UK. "Devolution" was the term given.

Interestingly, some are trying to get a football team together to represent the UK at the 2012 Olympics (*cough*farce*cough*), as the national teams can't compete.

A few definitions

England = A country bordered by Scotland and Wales.

Great Britain = England, Scotland, Wales. The largest of the islands

United Kingdom = Great Britain and Northern Ireland

British Isles. 56 islands that make up the British Isles, which the two most significant are Great Britain and Ireland that are mostly based on their own archipelago, but also include the Channel Islands.

I find it weird when people around here in NC say to me they hate the British but love the Scottish and give you a look when you tell them the Scottish are British.

Or to stop using Braveheart as their sole source for learning Scottish history?

Or Mel Gibson films in general, for that matter.

St Patrick wasn't Irish either. He was kidnapped from Roman Britain as a boy.

This is too much. Next thing you know, you'll be telling me Adolf Hitler wasn't German!

(...)

Well, I guess this more or less answers the question about the British Royal Navy and the state she's in: dazed and confused.

He was Austrian.

Stalin was not Russian but from Georgia.

Napoleon was from Corsica

Most of the Royal Family are of German Ancestry.
