MOSCOW (*******) - Russia's President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) on Friday came out in favor of rapid moves to approve the Kyoto Protocol (news - web sites) on global warming, Russian news agencies said.

"We are in favor of the Kyoto process. We support it. We have a few worries about the obligations which we will have to take on," Itar-Tass quoted him as telling a news conference.

The fate of the Kyoto Protocol has depended on Russian approval since Washington pulled out in 2001, since it cannot come into force without the backing of developed nations responsible for 55 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

"The fact that the EU has met us halfway in negotiations on the WTO (World Trade Organization (news - web sites)) entry could not but have helped Moscow's positive attitude to the question of ratifying the Kyoto Protocol," Interfax quoted him as saying.

"We will rapidly move toward ratification of this protocol," Putin added.

Minutes before Putin's announcement, Russia and the European Union (news - web sites) signed a deal on the terms of Moscow's entry into the WTO.

I feel sorry for Russia now. They will be responsible for curbing their own development and paying for countries such as China and India for their emissions.

All this for global warming supposedly caused by the burning of fossil fuels. It's amazing how .05% of the global carbon budget can be seen as extremely harmful and influential on global temperatures. :bash:

Well, you have to remember that there were specific quotas for every country. They were the hardest on the US. Perhaps the quotas on Russia are very forgiving?

No, Seraphim, you don't understand. The designers of the Kyoto protocols have this weird global socialistic worldview where the countries that are the most developed and wealthy are responsible for paying for the emissions of developing countries such as China and India. China and India don't have to pay **** in the Kyoto protocols even though they are responsible for most of the world's carbon output. Kyoto seeks to punish developed countries, as that is the purpose of the protocols.

I feel really sorry for Russia.

(And it's amazing how the Kyoto protocols take an extreme perspective on the causes of global warming. )
