Moin,
the British plan to establish Fire support Platoons within the Infantry Bn according to the Changes of the Future Infantry.
Will those Platoons form the 4th Platoon of each Company.
Or a Platoon add. to the already established MG Platoon?
Or just re.eqipped GPMG Platoon already in use?

this isnt set in stone in pamphlets yet its a concept originally used by the parachute regiment where the anti tank and mg platoons form up together to provide a fire support group at coy level either vehicle or dismounted with gpmg (sf),.50 ,javelin and the grenade machine gun........nothing new really just the rest of the army has got of its arse to realise its value.

this is where i get some idiot asking what i know about it and telling me the royal anglians or some other dross started it ....... off course they did

basically, they got all the big guns in to one platoon, they blat the baddies, allowing the other platoons to move in to an assault position. Just a bit of jigging about within companys to do this but its not an extra platoon.

AIRBORNEJOCK....i'm sure the army cadets were doing this donkeys years ago!p-)p-)

Doctrinaly the first use of the concept (in the British armed forces, in recent years) is the Commando 21 concept within 3 Commando Brigade.

The idea goes back at least to WWII, if not WWI - and was in use by line infantry then. Read Sidney Jary's 18 Platoon...
