Pretty high-tech. What's the reason behind the orange visor?

i honestly don't know although i could speculate and say maybe it's some form of high tech visor aimed at reducing glare in combat.
but your guess is as good as mine lol.

Slap some heavy armor on their legs and arms, and they wouldn't look that far off from the Halo Marines. ;)

Carbon-15
A carbon fiber (instead of steel or aluminum) framed AR-15 rifle. Early models were total junk. The new ones in the lest several months were pretty decent since the company was bought by Bushmaster.
There is no way it would hold up in a military enviroment, carbon fiber can not handle the stress after slight damage.

don't be surprised to see a lot more sci fi influence on military tech.
Sci Fi has a tendency to logically extrapolate current technology to a higher level, and take into consideration that movies employ f/x people with serious educational backgrounds in various technical fields it should be no surprise future military equipment looks like starship troopers.
Remember the diving helmets in the movie Sphere...well the US navy actually contacted the the guys who designed them and asked them to give input on future underwater equipment. And the space suits from Armageddon, NASA also took an intense interest in their design.

The team working OFW includes contracted Ex-grunts that bring some insight as to what kinds of things would help rather than hamper Joes in the field.
The orange visor is likely a representation of a HUD system intigration. The amber color is much like the color of shooting glasses. (Yellow is popular because it helps discern color contrasts.)
Much of the OFW stuff we see is a costume. It is simply a visual representation of what technologies are being sponsored in support of OFW. Land Warrior is a mid step towards OFW called Interim Force. LW also is pictured transforming as new technology is brought to function.

I like the tech but don’t you think that we will be just alienating more people (third world nations that is) if we appear looking like something from Starship troopers. I mean what do you think the afghan farmers and other will think when they see some of these dudes on their block?

prolly the same thing they think now...lol.
Seriously i'm all for intimidation in this instance. If they think they just landed on the set of Star Wars or Starship Troopers and decide not to fight than all the better. Attaining your goal with as little fuss or death and destruction as posible is always a good thing

Well i guess it would be counter productive in the Hearts and Minds aspect, but i'm sure support personel or troops engaged in building a clinic or looking after local livestock wouldn't be required to wear stuff like that

Actually that is the biggest focus of the OFW. Integrating the systems and tools so that the soldier doesn't have to lug around extra gear. Commo, intel, targeting, and NBC gear are supposed to be integrated into the uniform. Everything from the radio, batteries, gps, the antenna, and even vital signs moniter are part of the "skin out " technology. You already see the tactical benefit of the hi tech optics and networking that the LW is bringing... OFW just takes that to the next level with all the things a grunt uses.. but integrated and modular. Pretty cool. Ugly.. but cool.
This is a combat uniform.. by the way...patrolling and having personal contact with the public can be managed by taking your helmet off.. lifting the visor.. etc. Not really an issue.

another interesting thing that may have an effect on the military is nanotechnology. If this can be perfected (it's mainly theory at this point) it could revolutionize the way things r designed and constructed.
For those that might not know....Nanotechnology deals with constructing and manipulating items at the molecular level. The most commonly discussed proposal is the the utilization of microscopic robots (primarily composed of proteins) to rearrange molecules to suit a certain purpose. In other words literally u will be able to build anything out of the fundamental building blocks of nature.
The ramifications for the military? Lighter, stronger, more durable equipment. 'Smart ' uniforms (not only talking about chameleon type suits, but suits that could regulate body temp, even helping to seal a wound in case a soldier is injured) is a definite possibility. The list is endless...

Nanotechnology is extremely interesting but is probably about 100 years away from entering practical use, though you'll probably start to see it entering easy development phases in 50-60+ years.

Growing nanotrees
Using gold nanoparticle "seeds," researchers at Sweden's Lund University have grown treelike nanowire structures (shown) out of GaP and other semiconducting materials [Nat. Mater., published online May 2, http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nmat1133]. Solid-state physics professor Lars Samuelson and coworkers plant "nanoforests" by depositing catalytic nanoparticle seeds onto a substrate from which they grow nanowire "tree trunks" via a vapor-liquid-solid growth process. The researchers then repeat the process, depositing the seeds onto the tree trunks, in order to grow branches. They can also grow leaves onto the trees by repeating the process for a third time. The nano arborists say the seeding method gives them a high degree of control over the structures' branch length, diameter, and number. They also can make structures in which the trunks, branches, and leaves are all made of different materials.

nope, its a mock up.
it is a non existant wepaon and the little white covers on the front are supposed to be for miniature rockets.
i have a book with some info about the project, sounds promising, the core of the thing is the soldiers unifore which is soft to touch but if something is forced to it it will become very hard, as say a knife or bullet. it also monitors the soldiers health and will inflate around wounds automatically. it will also change colors the blend with the enviroment, i dont mean the preditor type camo that makes yo uinvisible but the ability to change from desert camo to urban or wood land when need be.
however keep in mind that this is all a vision, and many of the technologies are non existant or in their infancy.

I always like some of the ideas they had in ALIENS for the Colonial Marines. Shin-guard area kevlar would be useful, as would a flap of armor on the back of your k-pot. As opposed to the lower-cut that bangs into your ruck and Interceptor vest and keeps you from shooting in the ****e. Oh well, I just hope they test a few of these systems out in Iraq and Afghanistan before they try and field some weird set of goggles only to find they melt in extreme heat or some crap like that.
