South Africa donated two"NAMACURRA"Class patrol boats (Y07,Y30)to Mozambique in 2004.2.which were armed and used for coastal patrols. One of the boats was used up north where it was known there was a problem with illegal fishing. Since it has been deployed there, the problem has subsided substantially.

Mozambique: American boats for navy

Maputo - The United States government has offered the Mozambican navy three vessels for maritime patrols, seeking to protect the country‘s maritime and lake resources against dilapidation by illegal fishing.

The commander of the navy, Rear-Admiral Patricio Jotamo, told AIM that the vessels arrived in Mozambique on 21 December, and will be sent to naval bases at Tete, on the Zambezi, at Metangula, on Lake Niassa, and in the northern port of Nacala.

Jotamo said the American support would be important in helping minimise the looting of natural resources in Mozambican territorial waters.

For example, in the waters of the Bazaruto archipelago, off the coast of the southern province of Inhambane, fleets of pirate fishing vessels, some of which have been recently photographed, help themselves to Mozambique‘s marine resources. They act quite openly, in the belief that nothing will happen to them.

Asian pirate vessels are hunting sharks, so that they can cut off their fins, which are a prized delicacy in Asian restaurants. But the nets they use catch everything else as well.

Recently 42 dead turtles were counted in less than a month in the Bazaruto area: the turtles had been caught in the nets used by the pirates.

Helena Motta, of the Worldwide Fund For Nature, told AIM that illegal fishing for sharks is now concentrated along the coasts of countries such as Mozambique, which lack adequate naval protection.

The naval base at Tete commands patrol operations along the Cahora Bassa lake, where unlicensed operators have been fishing with impunity for kapenta, a fish that is highly prized on the Zimbabwean market.

A naval post has been set up at Nova Chicoa on the lake shore, and is working closely with the Tete provincial fisheries services. The commander of the Tete naval base, Capt Horacio Charles, thought that the work already undertaken had considerably reduced the amount of illegal kapenta fishing.

Mozambican Fisheries Minister Cadmiel Muthemba has promised heavy fines for illegal fishing. In same cases pirate vessels have been apprehended - but rather than pay the fines, their owners have just left them in Mozambican ports.

The U.S. has donated three ships to Mozambique to boost the country"s capacity for inspection of its waters, following an increase in illegal fishing, an officer of the Mozambican navy said Friday in Maputo. Commander of the Mozambican Navy, Patravio Jotamo, said that the three ships would operate from the naval sub-bases of Tete (center), Metangula (north) and Nampula (north), according to a report on macauhub.com "This important donation will contribute to fighting the pillage of our resources, which is occurring in Mozambique's waters," Jotamo said. Jotamo noted that the Bazaruto archipelago was one of the points of the country in which the actions of 'pirate fleets' was most intense. "The arrogance and the ease with which Mozambican marine resources are plundered shows that the pirates are confident that nothing will happen to them, because they operate in an area without the means to detain them," Jotamo said.

2005,China donated four 46-meter Class patrol boats, three 20-meter Class patrol boats, one land craft and a small floating dock to Cambodia on Thursday to help combat piracy, transnational crime and smuggling in the kingdom’s waters, an official said.
In a handover ceremony at Cambodia’s southwestern Sihanoukville port, Interior Ministry Secretary of State Am Sam An said the gift was a sign of the strong friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
”I would like to thank the Chinese government deeply for this very important grant,” he said in a speech.
”This is a strong and efficient contribution to the operation of the national marine police to fight against all transnational crime, especially drug smuggling, human smuggling and piracy,” he said.
Cambodia’s small and ageing navy engages in occasional spats with Vietnam and Thailand over disputed coastal waters.
Chinese investment is growing in the kingdom, and Beijing pledged more than 400 million dollars in investments, grants and loans to Cambodia during a visit by Prime Minister Hun Sen earlier July this year

Not really WW2, these Grisha III anti submarine warfare frigates have been built in late seventies, those are RBU-6000 Smerch-2, fires deapth charges. Could be quite effective if submarine is detected. However those two ships are beig phased out. There have been rumours, they'd be delivered to georgian Navy, however it is not yet clear.

Yea,in fact ,China donated the naval ships to some the third world countries in order to help them to rise their defense capability and protect their own rights and resource of oceans or sea.

Furthermore, U.S and many west countries also donated many more miltary ships to these developing countries, and their quantities and sum are much more than China. So, our military export is only little in the international military exchange.

Some news from Sierra Leone
US Government Donates Three Patrol Boats To The Republic Of Sierra Leone
Freetown
May 26, 2006
Contact: PAO
Tel: 226481

On May 26 the United States Department of State donated three patrol boats to the Maritime Wing of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). The donation is in support of increasing the security capacity of the RSLAF. The donation value equals $1.2 million. The United States Department of Defense has assisted with this contribution by the training of personnel in Sierra Leone as well as scheduling training for Maritime safety and security in the United States. The United States Department of Defense, in conjunction with the RSLAF, also sponsors several HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and counseling programs campaigns throughout the country.

The boats will be used for coastal security and law enforcement, giving the RSLAF the capacity to patrol and protect the natural resources of Sierra Leone waters. Personnel of the RSLAF Maritime wing have completed basic boat driving training and a course in Patrol Craft Propulsion Systems Maintenance. The United States Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School administered the training. In the near future the United States will continue its support with expanded courses in maintenance and boat operations.

The boats are 32 foot long Dauntless-class patrol boats manufactured by Seaark with in-board, stern drive propulsion. They also have floodlights, searchlights and foghorns to assist commercial and leisure vessels in emergency situations..

Sierra Leone’s President Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah witnessed the ceremony, as well as officials of the Ministry of Defense and other distinguished guests. Delivering his remarks, US Ambassador Thomas Hull said, “This country’s waters are a precious resource, both beautiful and rich with sea life. It is our hope that these boats are used to protect the sea-borders as well as guard against illegal fishing along with other illegal activities off the coast of Sierra Leone. Let these boats be a symbol of the concern of the people of the United States for the ongoing development of Sierra Leone.”

Sorry, I mean no ships bigger than a frigate, so several frigates is fine, but once you hit destroyer size, you're not a small navy anymore. (NZ navy would count as small I think, 2 x frigate, 1 x mini-LHD, couple of patrol craft and auxilleries).

[Info from DEFENCE TALK FORUM]TKMS has recently been probed by German police on corruption charges in connection with a tender for an Angolan requirement of "one corvette and three coast guard ships" worth some 750 million euro. The tender is from mid-2006.

Now, does anyone have any information what kind of ships TKMS was trying to sell there?

In particular regarding the "coast guard ships" - any chance of these being Guardian or Sentinel OPVs, which were presented by TKMS at MECON 2006 and are the only OPVs in TKMS' portfolio at the moment?

Guardian OPV is supposed to be a 80m budget ship built with commercial standards and light armament, primarily for civilian and police purposes - budget ship as in 30 million euro as a basic price.
Sentinel OPV is a rehashed Meko A100 (another name for the Sentinel is Meko 100 OPV), modified into a multi-role system much like the Meko A200 MRV - basically modified from the Malaysian Kedah class.

The "corvette" would also be interesting. Possibility of an identical Meko A100 hull with heavier armament (Sentinel in "Navy" outfit)? Or a Meko A200 disguised under the name corvette as in South Africa?

The high cost of 750 million euro would suggest the "pricier" alternatives for both parts.

In fact there was never a sister ship on the Nigerian Navy, Nigeria had a smaller corvette, I think you must be referring to it.

This was the First Frigate built using the highly sucessfull concept MEKO from Blohm & Voss , it was the first MEKO 360 (she has 4 sisterships serving in the Argentinian Navy)

The other pic referring as "Thames River 2005?" I think was taken last year during the celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar ;)

Cuba

Note: In recent years the Cuban navy has nearly ceased to exist.
All submarines, frigates, minecraft, patrol vessels and amphibious craft
are reported to be non-operational, derilect, permanently moored, hulked,
etc. The following listing represents a best-case survey of the
remaining operational vessels of 100 tons or more displacement. Many
vessels listed are probably inoperable, and the decline in Cuban forces
is expected to continue without end.

Pauk class large patrol boat

Dimensions: 29.8 x 8.3 x 3.2 meters/97.7 x 27.2x 10.5 feet
Propulsion: 2 diesels, 2 shafts, 1,200 bhp, 12 knots
Armament: 3 12.7 mm MG
Crew: 8
Three Soviet tugs transferred 1967-72. Probably used for
patrol duties, as there are no ships for them to tug.

Yelva class diving tenders/patrol craft

Displacement: 295 tons full load
Dimensions: 40.9 x 8.0 x 2.07 meters/134.2 x 26.3 x 6.8 feet
Propulsion: 2 diesels, 2 shafts, 600 bhp, 12.4 knots

Crew: ??
Three wooden-hull fishing craft built 1960's. Probably used for patrol
duties.

Yevgenya class patrol minesweepers

Displacement: 91.5 tons full load
Dimensions: 26.13 x 5.9 x 1.38 meters/85.7 x 19.4 x 4.5 feet
Propulsion: 2 diesels, 2 shafts, 600 bhp, 12 knots
Armament: 1 dual 25 mm
Crew: 10
Soviet-built inshore minesweepers. Those few craft remaining
in service are probably employed in patrol duties, given the
lack of mine threats in Cuban waters. Up to four (of 12) craft may
survive.

Excellent thread! Here's a photo of the patrol cutter CG 5 Barracuda of the Trinidad @ Tobago Defence Force. The photo is from the Swedish Marinkalender. Barracuda is no longer in service but her sister CG 6 Cascadura might still be. If so she is certainly the last Swedish Spica boat still in service anywhere. Is it possible that someone may have better photos of these boats? I should think that anyone who knows the Sw Spica or Norrköping class missile boats can recognize the hull lines.

Here's a photo of the federal German Coast Guard patrol boat BP 22 Neustrelitz. She and her sister BP 23 Bad Düben are former East German missile boats of the Sassnitz class or project 151. There is info on the reconstruction of these boats in the link below the photo.

Three near sisters to the Sassnitz class are also serving in the Polish navy as the Orkan class. Here's a photo from the Swedish armed forces of ORP Grom being outfitted with RBS-15 Mk2 missiles at Muskö, Sweden.

The Royal Bahraini Navy protects the waters of Bahrain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahrain). The Navy, previously called the Bahrain Defense Force, Naval Branch, later the Bahrain Amiri Navy, consisted in 1992 of eight vessels and 500 sailors.

The lead ship is the 138-meter frigate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Hazard_Perry_class_frigate), Sabha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahrainian_frigate_Sabha_%2890%29), formerly a U.S. warship.

This is a very interesting thread and I think many appreciate your info and photos as well as others. I don't have any news but I like the Croatian navy as well. Can it possibly be because they use much Swedish equipment? ;-)

Estonian Navy (hopefully, estonians would join up)

Admiral Pitka - so far the main ship of estonian navy:

(pictures removed)

The rest are mine-hunters and mine-layers

There are also the two Rihtniemi class P 422 Ristna and P 423 Suuropi patrol boats. They have an ASW capability and are former Finnish patrol boats. I saw them a few years ago laying dearmed in Helsinki, presumably in preparation for the transfer. Data: 1956, 90/110 t, 15 kn, two twin 23 mm, two 5-barrelled ASW rocket launchers type RBU-1200.

According to my Marinkalender 2002 there were also the following patrol assets:

Grif 1976, 36/40 t, 30 kn, one twin heavy mg (Russian Zhuk class)
Ahti 1960, 175/190 t, 10 kn, one twin 25 mm (ex- Danish patrol trawler Mallemukken)
Laine 1986, 87 t, 9 t (ex- Russian Revalia; might belong to the Coastguard)
PVL 100, PVL 101, PVL 102 Koskelo class, 1955-60, 75/97 t, 23 kn, one heavy mg
PVL 103 Pikker 1995, 88 t, 24 kn, one twin heavy mg, 2 light mg
PVL 104 Tiir Serna class, 1994, 53/105 t, 30 kn, (former Russian landing craft)
PVL Torm 1966, 105/125 t, 37 kn, one twin 25 mm, one twin heavy mg (ex- Norwegian gun boat Arg)
PVL 106 Maru 1964, 135 t, 23 kn, one twin heavy mg, one light mg (ex- Finnish patrol boat Viima)
PVL 107 Köu 1963, 530 t, 15 kn, two 25 mm (ex-Finnish patrol boat Silmä)
PVK 019 1970, 50 t, 9 kn (ex- Russian Nyryat class)

Presumably some of these are still in service?

Before the early 1970s, Honduras did not have an independent navy. The country had only one utility boat twelve meters in length, which allowed personnel from the army to patrol coastal waters intermittently. In 1972 the Navy of Honduras (Marina de Honduras) became a separate service with its own mission and general staff. The navy had a personnel strength of 1,200, including 600 marines, in 1993. The navy had doubled in size since 1983 because of changing military perspectives concerning the importance of naval forces in Central America and because of an increase of United States aid. The navy is headquartered at three bases: Amapala on Isla del Tigre in the Golfo de Fonseca on the Pacific coast, Puerto Cortйs on the western Caribbean coast, and Puerto Castilla on the central Caribbean coast. In 1993 the fleet consisted of five fast-attack craft, eight river- and seven coastal-patrol craft, nine landing craft, and six auxiliary craft. In addition, the navy controls the First Naval Infantry Battalion, based at Puerto Cortйs.

It appears the -ex Finnish Rihtniemi class P 422 Ristna and P 423 Suuropi patrol boats have had their aft twin 23 mm replaced by an inflateable boat and a couple of light MG's.

Here are some photos of the Estonian flagship Admiral Pitka (the ex- Danish Beskytteren):

Thanks! This is the only photo I've seen so far of the Estonian navy's ENS Torm, the former Norwegian Storm class gunboat KNM Arg. How come she hasn't retained her 76 mm Bofors gun forward like her sisters in the Latvian and Lithuanian navies? Contrary to my earlier statement about her though she seems to have retained her Bofors 40 mm L70 aft.

SPECIAL FOR YOU

Thanks again CARAMBOL! Unfortunately I was forced to downgrade my internet connection recently, but it was worth the waiting during the download! ;-)

Yes, she definately have retained the Bofors 40 mm aft. Maybe the blue *****ing on the hull indicates she belong to the border guard or coast guard rather than the navy, and that's why the automatic 76 mm surface gun forward has been replaced by a twin 25 mm of Soviet origin?

These boats are a part of the Pacific Patrol Boat project created by Australia in the early 80's, resulting in twenty-two boats having been donated by Australia to twelve recipient countries. A life extension program for all boats was initiated by Australia in 2000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific-class_patrol_boat

http://www.tenix.com/PDFLibrary/27.pdf

Judging from the rust on the hulls of the Tongan maritime force's patrol boats they don't look too well maintained.

Very nice photos! If Finland, Malaysia and South Africa are regarded as small navies I might get away with these photos of Finnish vessels: ;-)

A Hamina class attack craft firing an Umkhonto-IR SAM:
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/6599/haminaclassfiringanumkhre8dotjpg (http://imageshack.us)

The diving support vessel Mursu (I think the vessel in the foreground is the minelayer Pohjanmaa, but I'm not sure):
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/5553/mursu98ow9dotjpg (http://imageshack.us)

Mursu again:

The attack craft Oulu leave Helsinki for the last time 13 july 2007 to be decommissioned the next day:

Hanko, a Hamina class FAC, in Helsinki 17 July 2007:
http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/5375/hanko82afastattackcraftvh0dotjpg (http://imageshack.us)

A favourite of mine, a Kuha class minesweeper in camouflage with a Kiiski class minesweeping drone nearby having assisted:

Frontier guard coastal patrol vessel Kiisla in Helsinki 11 Dec 1998 (she now belongs to the navy):

Coast guard patrol craft Merikarhu in Helsinki 24 Feb 2007:

The new school ship Fabian Wrede during launching 15 Aug 2006:

Minelayer Uusimaa in Helsinki 8 July 2006 (she has since been modernized):

A Jurmo class landing craft:

Finally some nostalgia ;-),

Coastal defence ship Väinämöinen in 1944:

Decommissioned Tuima class fast minelaying craft (former missile boats):

Bofors 120 mm L46 main gun on Karjala of the Turunmaa class corvettes. This is the fastest medium calibre naval gun ever made:
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7942/thebofors120mmmaingunonjp1dotjpg (http://imageshack.us)

Two decommissioned Helsinki class missile boats, Turku (to the right) and possibly Helsinki to the left:

Now, why would I be a fan of the Finnish navy? ;-)

This I think is one of very few photos I've seen of a Mexican -ex US Gearing class destroyer with a modern Bofors 57 mm Mk2 or Mk3 gun mount. She seems to carry an old pennant number. Anyone who knows if the Bofors gun mount was temporarily fitted for test purposes or not? If not - why is it not fitted any longer?

Here's another photo:

Just a personal opinion...I would not consider PAKISTAN NAVY a "small navy" ;)
