Few years ago during accidental explosion in Afghanistan two German combat engineers were killed. One of them was friend of mine. I believe they tried to disable old russian anti-aircraft missile. If you have any pictures or other material related to this tragic event, would you mind to post them? I would really appreciate.

First of all I'm sorry to hear about Your friend.

This is what I have been able to find out about the accident.

The accident occured on the 6th of March 2002 when a danish/german team of EOD/combat engineers were defusing an old russian SA-3 surface to air missil.

According to a combined danish/german investigation team the accident occured because the safety rules weren't followed. Amongst other things the soldiers used electric screwdrivers, ordinary hammer and chisel. It's beleived that the use of these unautorised tools caused the explosion.

This is a picture from a memorialservice held in the ISAF-camp in Kabul a year after the accident

The priest ended the service with the words:

"When You go home
tell them about us and say
For Your life tomorrow
They gave their life today"

Is it necessary to tell everybody the name of a fallen comrade? :bash:

To Thomsen:
Is it supposed to be a secret? If so, I am sorry for that. At least somebody will remember him by name. He was a good man.

As far as i know, the soldiers defused the rocket, so that an officer could put it next to his desk, as a souvenir :bash:

They wanted to take it with them as training material.
