The XM29 above is a mock-up. As far as I know the current functional model is this:

As for the XM8, this is the current model (the ones above are mock-ups as well):

suppsedly hk siad that all photos so far have been of the prototype 1, and the military is currently evaluating type 2, and there will be a 3rd type before production. i dont know the validity of these claims as this is one of those "i heard from..." situations.
but the top photos are of a mockup done by the army, hk had nothing to do with it.

Anybody know if an American firearms manufacture is even try'n to compete for the new combat rifle design? (I know the 20mm nade launcher component is built by an American firm and last I heard a UK firm was supply'n the optics...I'm refer'n to the assault rifle component)
I know, I know, HK is build'n a plant in Columbus, GA to build the M-whatever-it's-gonna-be-number'd if they win/won the contract.

well its a long story but i dont believe so. the army never asked for the xm8. so naturally no one else offered anything else. the army asked for the oicw, hk competed with colt, hk won that contract, but where unable to produce teh oicw, so their contract was modified to the xm8. a little unfair to other manufacturers.
but it is to bee seen wheather or not teh xm8 will go anywhere or not. or if it will evolve into something else(*cough*hk m4*cough*) again.

Am I the only one who thinks the concept with all the rails looks better? :)

Interesting choice to aim the 40mm with, would have thuoght they'd use something more advanced to go with the new optics ;)

Anybody know the kick back on that thing? I mean, i dont know **** about guns, but holding a gun like the way the guy is in the second pic with the camera targeting i think, wouldnt that focker like go flying out of his hands?

5.56 won't be a problem regarding recoil. This doesn't mean you'll HIT anything holding it like that, but it won't hurt your wrist or anything. The weight of the weapon would be more uncomfortable when you hold it like that than the recoil, IMO.
I wouldn't wanna launch the 20mm holding it like that though
