Hello ****,

here we go then!

I was so lucky at the time that I had the chance to be on board of most of the US Ships which visited my town and I also took some pics. There were no digital cameras so all the pics are from a reflex and scanned. I hope you'll forgive me if I don't remember the names of the units and some pics may be wrongly described.

These first pics were taken on board of USS Kennedy CV67

When we first got the Sydney, she was still flying planes from the flight deck and when we got the Melbourne they decided that it would cost to much to refit the Sydney's flight deck so they used her mainly as transport then paid her off. A bit sad really, if I am wrong with any of my facts I apologize and feel free to correct me but I'm stating what I have read and remember over the years. (Too long ago)...lol

Settling easily on the deck of the USS Coral Sea (CV-43), the Navy North American Aviation AJ-1 large attack bomber is the heaviest airplane ever to land on a carrier. Navy pilots from Composite Squadron Five (VC-5) in Aug 1950 completed landings and take offs with AJ-1's in carrier operations off the Atlantic Coast. Each weighing over seventeen (17) tons, the AJ-1's are powered by one jet and two piston engines, and have a top speed of over 350 miles an hour. The AJ-1 Savage with two turning and one burning was the only carrier based aircraft capable of delivering nuclear warheads. This VC-5 aircraft piloted by LCDR Don Runyon is shown during carrier qualifications on USS Coral Sea. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

THEY look okay I can understand the need for change, but now that negates the beautifull and collectable navy blue ballcaps with gold ship letter named on the front....caps that i have a few hundred now and make wonderfull collectors items. Now you can walk down Norfolk streets and piers look at a sailor and never know what ship they are attached to , it was always nice to see that. Disappointed, but thats life.

D-Mitch Can you tell which is the purposse and mission of the naval Version of the Su-25???

Su-25UTG (Wikipedia)

The Su-25UTG (Uchebno-Trenirovochnyy s Gakom) is a variant of the Su-25UB designed to train pilots in takeoff and landing on a land-based simulated carrier deck, with a sloping ski-jump section and arrester wires. The first one flew in September 1988, and approximately 10 were produced. About half remained in Russian service after 1991, used with Russia's sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov. Such a small number of aircraft were insufficient to serve the training needs of Russia's carrier air group, so a number of Su-25UBs were converted into Su-25UTGs, these aircraft being distinguished by the alternative designation Su-25UBP (Uchebno-Boyevoy Palubny) —the adjective "palubnyy" meaning "deck", indicating that these aircraft have a naval function. About ten of these aircraft are currently operational in the Russian Navy as part of the 279th Naval Aviation Regiment.

With the novice German design, what are some thoughts about how the Graf Zeppelin would have opperated as a CV? Managing her aircraft, layout, etc. As a one-off, I'm not too interested in how she would (?) have contributed to the German war effort.

Great thread all,

Nice photo, thanks! But it is not this I am looking for. It is only a cruiser, you can see it from the front, like comeing to the screen as I remember and an aircraft carrier like a huge thing near to it, and also some connections between them, a rope or something else for communication. A lot of light blue in the photo.. I have this photo in Greece but not now here..

You're welcome my friend! I think only United States have the luxury to keep so many and big warships (battleships, aircraft carriers) in such perfect conditions. HMS Victory costs a lot of money already to UK to keep it like good, you can imagine how much money will cost for an Invicible class aircraft carrier..

Rear Adm. Michael McMahon, program executive office for Aircraft Carriers, said CVN 79 will soon have a name and a crew and will be a great ship. He also recognized the shipbuilders from Newport News and said, "While the carriers are recognized as a national asset so too is this shipyard and the shipbuilders that are in this yard."

The Newport News shipyard is performing this work under a construction preparation contract that allows for engineering, planning, long-lead time material procurement and initial manufacturing to begin before the full construction contract is awarded.

"The U.S. Navy must be ready to respond to the challenges that lay ahead," said Rep. Bobby Scott (Va-3). "To ensure the Navy's future readiness, shipbuilding must remain a top priority of our national defense strategy."

Full construction of the yet unnamed CVN 79 is anticipated to begin in late 2012 with delivery to the U.S. Navy scheduled for 2020. Construction is currently underway on the first ship of the class, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), with about 25 percent of the structural units already in dry dock.

"Having two carriers under construction within a five-year period is the kind of stability that we all benefit from – the Navy, the shipbuilders, our suppliers and our country," said Matt Mulherin, vice president and general manager for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. "It allows for the most efficient flow of the workforce from one ship to the next, and facilitates a learning curve. This stability is key to cost efficiency and to the health of our industrial base."

Hey Guys what do you think about this article of the "Wall Street Journal"

"The Decline of U.S. Naval Power"

-Sixty ships were commonly underway in America's seaward approaches in 1998, but today there are only 20. We are abdicating our role on the oceans.
