U.S. ARH to Get Gatling Gun
By kris osborn

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The U.S. Army has decided to arm the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter (ARH) with the GAU-19/A, a 185-pound, three-barrel Gatling gun by General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products (GD ATP).

The U.S. Army has decided to equip a recon helicopter with the GAU-19 Gatling gun. (Contributed) A rapid-fire gun is crucial for a scout helicopter, which is likely to encounter fast-emerging enemies, an Army official said.

The Army is negotiating a price for the first 490 GAU-19/As, which can fire 1,300 12.7mm rounds a minute. The weapon will be externally mounted.

"We are working internally on some projects to make the gun lighter," said John Binkley, GD ATP's senior director of business development, at the AUSA Winter symposium here..

Developed by GD in the 1980s, the GAU-19/A is being used in Turkey and on Black Hawk helicopters in Colombia by counter-narcotics forces, Binkley said.

GD ATP will build the barrels for the U.S. Army's GAU-19/A at its facility in Saco, Maine.

The ARH, a replacement for the OH-58 Kiowa Warrior, is expected to field by 2011.

Can you turn the gun (like AH-64) or will it be fixed on the helicopter(like OH-58)?

Yeah! Finally a .50cal Ggun for the Scouts!

Weapon will be fixed. ARH = new OH-58D (without the mast mounted site)

They should have kept the Comanche going and then fielded it. It was sexy.

And designed to stop the Soviets coming across the Fulda Gap,Johnny Taliban uses the Mk1 eyeball and the Apache and Cobra's are more than enough to deal with any threat.

If I was standing behind that, I'd be smiling ear to ear too.

Just a question

I know this is an Armed Recon Helicopter and not a full attack bird but wouldn't a 20mm GAU or similar give it better options against light armour as opposed to a .50 system?
Or is the weight difference and ammo capacity limits too high?

Great looking piece of kit though p-)

When I went to a Korean airshow a few years ago, they had door mounted GAU-19s on a UH-60P. Also, IIRC the USN uses them on some of their H-60s too.

Alfa, short answer is 20 weights to much for a small recon helo like the ARH. Another consideration is the recoil. 20mm would cause fatigue cracks much earlier in use.

Thats a good point, just how small is this bird going to be?
I mean Australia calls their Tigers an ARH.

It's barely larger than the OH-58D. It's essentially a Bell 407...

hmm nice to see a .50 spewing out at a vast rate but i have a few quibbles with the concept. a light reconnaisance helicopter armed with a heavy rotary cannon and a 3 barrel one so the rpm isn't as blistering as the ones commonly seen would a revolver cannon not fit the bill better?

- Alex.

edit: ok perhaps the current availability of the weapon plays a part in it

GAU-19/A on a Mexican Navy MD 902.

Very nice looking. I always liked the NOTAR concept and with the .50 cal, even nicer.

Now the problem is...how much ammo do you need!

This should have dual feed. HE and SLAP. That will kick some butt

Yeah, I always tell myself I do not need to be superrich; I do not need to own my own island with a bunch of cool toys that I can do whatever I want with; that I am doing just fine. Then I see these guys flying around in that MD 902. NOTAR, an FFAR pod (on the other side) and a .50 gatling gun. Damn.
