Liberal Slip for McCain

February 28, 2008, 5:54 pm

Laura Meckler reports from Richardson, Texas, on the presidential race.

Oops! Sen. John McCain slipped up a bit — but quickly caught himself.

“I’m a proud conservative liberal Republican — conservative Republican,” he said at a town hall meeting today at Texas Instruments Inc. “Hello?” he said immediately, as if trying to reach his inner voice. “Easy there.”

He went on, “Let me say this: I am a proud conservative Republican ….”

Social conservatives still wary of McCain may not find much amusement in this slip of the tongue. In any case, his answers were conservative, including his response to a man who identified himself as gay and asked if McCain would consider repealing the “don’t ask-don’t tell” policy that prevents gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the military. McCain replied that military leaders he respects believe the policy is working. “There are some issues in which we just have to rely on the views of our military leaders,” he said.

His first liberal slip was when he co-sponsored Ted Kennedy's amnesty bill.

I honestly think he's the best candidate the GOP has put out since George H. W. Bush, which may be an insult to alot of people, but damn, I am glad to have somebody who isn't so far in either direction that they get ignorant and readily dismiss views from another perspective.

I guess this is the one time in a blue moon that a candidate shares my right of center political stance. Which isn't to say he hasn't dismissed anything from another perspective, but he has a good track record with me.

Im happy he doesn't make Social conservatives happy. They are the last people I care to see happy. Well them and hippies.

Its the extreme of the right and left that are ruining this country.

And this comes as a surprise? There are Democrats that are more conservative than Republicans, which also mean there are Republicans that are more liberal than Democrats (did that for the hard of reading).

McCain is a Liberal - Moderate R. There probably is not a lot of difference beween him and Hillary. Obama being more to where ever the mob is. I know a number of rural Oregon Democrats that are a lot more conservative than McCain. Some times the difference between R's and D's is only in perception.
