Two Russians Killed in Attack in Iraq
MOSCOW (*******) - Two employees of a Russian company working on a power plant in Iraq (news - web sites) were killed on Wednesday when their bus came under attack, officials said.
At least five of their workmates were injured. Two Iraqis were killed.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko, speaking on state television, said: "A bus carrying Russian specialists was attacked.
"They were working on contract with the Russian company Interenergoservis...Two Russian specialists fell victims of the attack."
Yakovenko said five Interenergoservis employees were injured. Other reports said six were hurt.
Russian media said the bus was attacked when it was leaving Dora power station outside Baghdad.
The company's executive director, Alexander Rybinsky, said by telephone that officials were checking the citizenship of the victims. Employees of Russian firms in Iraq often come from other former Soviet states.
Two Russian engineers working for Interenergoservis were abducted for about a week in Iraq this month after their car was ambushed. One of their colleagues was shot dead.
Rybinsky said 234 Interenergoservis employees were still in Iraq. "We intend to evacuate our remaining workers there as soon as possible," he said.
The firm evacuated 109 workers after the abduction incident.
Russia, along with France and Germany, opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow wanted assurances that a credible transitional government would be formed before it could backing a new U.N. Security Council resolution sponsored by the United States and Britain.
