Its illegal to carry a concealed firearm unless your a police officer (I'm pretty sure) and they still need to get special licsense to do so.
For knives I think if the blades over 8 inches it can get you in trouble if you were carrying it around.

is a .40 better than a .45?
9mm = This weights range from 90 to 147 grains and velocities are in the 1000 feet per second to 1400 fps range. In addition to being inexpensive the 9mm bullets themselves are smaller and therefore the magazine capacities are larger than for the other calibers.
.40 = This round came about by duplicating the ballistics of the 10mm FBI round. The .40 S&W has projectile weights from 150 to 200 grains and velocities of 700 feet per second to 1100 fps. The .40 S&W is often considered a good compromise between the small, high-capacity 9mm and the much larger .45 ACP round.
.45 = Heavy projectile weighing in at 185 grains and up to 230 grains and travelling at velocities from 800 feet per second to 1000 fps. This heavy bullet often makes for a solid recoil and it's large size makes for a greatly reduced magazine capacity.
They are both good. Personal preference, I guess. I will never own a 9mm, though. I want stopping power, therefore I choose the .40.

This is the weapon i qualified with for my CCW ( carry permit ) freaking anit aircraft gun in your hands . .45 long colt cartrige packs quite a punch . I couldn't really find a good holster for it , it's a snub nose and the bullet will tend to go through my potential attacker and right through six or seven hoses behind him so i just got a makarov 9mm . Phobus holster that clips right onto your pants , no belt needed , hydroshock rounds and later to add night sights if i can .

Lethal "weapons"...
Personally I keep a Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile in one pocket and a herd of angry rhinos in the other.
I'll use either dependent upon the situation, for example - the time that some old lady tried to push in front of me in a line while I was buying a newspaper, I told her "I've got a herd of rhinos in my pocket just waiting to charge your ass", she gave me an odd look and went to the back of the queue. It's a good job too because the Titan would have been overkill in that situation.

In LA...that's pretty much it. There's one more way. Do the paper-work to become a registered gun-dealer (I think you have to take a gun safety class or something too). Once you're a registered dealer, just apply for a CCW. Almost always works.

Sorry dude but the only way you are ever going to be able to get a CCW in Canada is if you are one of the few that are allowed to have one. The basis to have one is a little hazy but IIRC if you are able to give proof to the RCMP that your life is in danger and you need one. Also certain police officials or people associated with the upper echelons of police organizations but are not officers themselves are allowed to carry. For us regular citizens however, we are plainly sh*t outta luck for concealed carry. Using anything for self defence up here often results with the victim of the initial assualt serving time as well as the perp. Stupid laws we have up here :slap:

It is very likely to be illegal in Canada and getting a license/permit is likely to require a legitimate reason and have to be approved by the authority.

hmmm....why not? hobby and self-defense. Owning weapon is an American thing, I think most of you foreigners wouldn't understand.
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control.
From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control.
From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1938, Germany established gun control.
From 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1935, China established gun control.
From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1956, Cambodia established gun control.
From 1975 to 1977, one million “educated” people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1964, Guatemala established gun control.
From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1970, Uganda established gun control.
From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
The number of defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: ABOUT 55 MILLION!

Use said weapon on scumbag = prosecution -house, which scumbag takes through court
Don't even use a weapon on a scumbag and use fists + legs = possibley prosecution
